    I Drove a 2001 E39 M5

I wasn't that impressed it the straight line preformance. :(

I was expecting it to be snappier. The owner and I decided that with a tune and exhaust its going to be more responsive. I didn't get to take it on any twisties or to any good corners where I could get it to slide so I won't comment on how the car performs side ways.

    I was expecting more.

It's a 10 year old car, what do you expect? It wasn't all that fast then; it's certainly not faster now.

I am sorry you did not get to assess the preformance while sliding.

well, at least you have an early model e30 to drive instead.

The problem with those things is the flywheel. It takes forever to spool up. In the low gears it's not hugely impressive, but it feels like it pulls in 4th as hard as it pulls in 2nd. The way it hammers past 150 is hugely impressive; the way it pulls past 50 isn't so mind-blowing. At least, that was my impression in 2004 or so.

I owned a 2000 M5 for about a year, bought it with body damage/electrical gremlins. Completely stock it would light up the tires in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear with sport mode on, traction control off, and a heavy foot. From a roll it was a monster, in the twisties it was a blast.

Methinks you either had it overhyped in your head, or you didn't realize how smooth it feels while accelerating. Its a 4000lb, 400hp N/A car, its never going to rip your head off under acceleration..

Hmm-I've had my '00 M5 for 3 years now and it's acceleration still impresses me when I drive it. And I agree with Sean-the way it continues to accelerate past 100mph is something! I am selling mine since I have replaced it with a '07 X5 4.8i, but every time I drive it I know I am going to miss it. They truly are great cars.

The S62 really doesn't have much on a 25 year old tired 120 hp E motor.
