    Cabin Noise

    Hi
I've been looking at an E30 in my neighborhood and finally got to drive it yesterday. It's an 86 325es in pretty good condition. Anyways, I noticed while driving it there seemed to be quite a bit of cabin noise. No ticking or knocking or anything just a mild whine as speed increased. I'm coming from owning an E36 and was wondering if mild cabin noise was common on the E30s? Anyone driven both and can comment?
Thanks for your help. Everyone on this board is incredibly nice and there isn't a lot of crap like you find on other forums.
    Thanks again
    Rob

probably just the LSD. nothing to really worry about.

was the noise coming from the back of the car? if so that is probably what it was.

if you could pinpoint where the noise is coming from, that would be good. most likely something is wrong, as i would say e30's are not particularly loud.

a bad wheel bearing will cause noise at whining noise.

e30s are at least 12 years old, older cars by simply virtue of being old usually have a little bit more noise. I personally have never ridden in a 'quiet' e30, and i've ridden in some basically perfect condition ones.

        old cars=louder *shrug*

could also be the fuel pump.

My car is pretty darn quiet inside IMO. The only thing I can hear is the fuel pump and it's a very faint noise, and I can't hear it at all with the radio on.

my car is very quiet, and solid when going over bumps or dips, there's a little more road noise due to the stiff shocks, but i'd say the interior noise is comparable to my dads 2002 e46 330ci. well, at least it was like this up until i got a unknown squeak about a month ago

I took out my back seats and its not all that more noisy. I hear a sound that sounds like a jet whine as I go faster, but I think its just the axle. I hear a bit of gear whine as I progress through the gears as well. I don't see any other big deals though. I actually like all that noise!

Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
              Mark: "You never will."

my heater blower sqeaks like a mother fucker, (the most annoying sound in the world).

otherwize, in comparison to my moms 94 chrystler van and my dads 2000 audi a6, my car is the loudest by far.

i hear the engine most of all (i like that sound)

if it whines as speed increases. maybe its the speakers ive heard cars engine sounds come through the speakers cause of improper ground.

it is most likely the fuel pump making that noise. I didn't even have a radio in my car for the past 4 months so that's the only singing I heard, other than the exaust note. :)

it should be a very faint humm or whine..

Yeah, like, I can hear it, but just barely. If I put it in neutral and let it coast while the engine is at idle, I can hear it then. Otherwise, I never hear it. And it wouldn't be my radio, because all I get through that is static, and only through the right set of speakers. Quite pathetic... But, the engine is my music!

no, the fuel pump is also in the back. if it's really loud, it could be the diff, but a faint noise is normal.

...just a mild whine as speed increased.
The fuel pump noise is more of a buzz/hum. The diff noise is more of a whine kinda like when something mechanical is roatating fast. D.shaft or diff can be to blame.
