If you like Wagons, get a (for 15k) high mileage '99 540iT but the manual version was a special order from Germany so you'd have to settle for an Automatic. There are also some E34 M5 Tourings imported from Germany around somewhere in the US that have a stick but they are much more expensive.

Honestly - I still like your idea of the Porsche 911 - if you look really hard and stretch a bit you might be able to find a nice 89 for like 17k. But you may need to look on the West coast because the East coast Porsche's are either really beat up if they were driven year round, or are pristine garage queens (summer only) and thus command a premium, ergo look on the West coast.
I knew a guy selling a White 89 Cab with a few issues for like 17-18 if you want to get his info PM me.

      I personally dislike the 911s from 73-89.

If I had money to spend on an older 911, 73 911S (just being realistic here) would be my first choice. I've had few chances to drive these, and while it is slow, the handling more than makes up for it.
73 RS/RSR is still my dream car of all times, along with Daytona 365GTB.

73 rocking the ducktail

It'd be very difficult to hunt down a car worth buying though, but it's worth a look for sure.

Aside from rennlist, there's also flat6.net you could check out. But rennlist probably has the most info on 911s. (?)

Another car I'd like to own if I ever get around to it is the Lotus Europa. I remember as a child being driven in these and the car/seat is so low that my dad could stick his hands out of the window and put out his cigarettes on the ground.

Either way, I hope you are pretty good at driving, because if I owned a 911 right now, I would probably spin it into a tree pretty quickly ;) It's not like RWD cars that the ass snaps back in place, once the ass escapes on 911s it's a pretty scary feeling.

I think you mean 944 (the 951 is the 944 turbo). You can also get the turbo front bumper and slap in on a n/a 944 as well as the turbo rear valence.

If I were you, and I could not afford the upkeep on a VW, I would be buying a new car with a warranty, like a Scion tC or a Mini Cooper or something.

again with the E30 M3 (and any porsche, air or water cooled), the purchase price is only the beginning...

if you want something cool and german, get a 944 Turbo, its fast as shit, and you can get decent ones for $6-7k, and put the rest in a bank account for when it breaks (it will)

Get an e36 M3. You could get one for 15k with around a 100k on it and it would rock. Search around for the right one and youll be more than happy with your summer car purchase. Plus you wont be dealing with so many problems like you would on a 30 year old Porche. 30 years is alot of age.

E36s are sooo common, so im leaning towards the 944 turbo.

they are fun cars, with minor mods (software basically) they can be faster than 95% of E30s, and most e36s for that matter. The stability at speed is just plain unbelievable. They handle and brake great, stock. 951 (in good shape, ie fix all the problems) + software+tires=great ride.

My roommate had a 951 track that put down ~300whp on a mustang dyno, and that thing was fucking quick. Leda coilovers, 996TT brakes, A032Rs, quite a beast.

I heard the Porsche 944 was one of the best handling cars they made for a long time, but that was just hearsay.

my best friend had a 944 (non turbo). he drives an e36 right now.
he explained it perfectly to me the other day when i suggested that
he get another one since he loves them so much. "kevin, the e30 m3
is probably one of your favorite cars of all time, and you would love
to own one again, but they are too expensive for you at this point
in your life... its that exact same reason why i won't be buying another
944 anytime soon. i will drool over them, just as you drool over e30 m3s
but its going to be a while before i ever have another one."

cliffnotes: 944s are porsche's version of the e30 m3. be careful.

at least 944 turbos are fast though, and almost all 944s (NA and turbo) are cheaper than E30 M3s.
