There is just something about finishing off the job by torquing to spec with a nice trq wrench. Makes you feel like one of the guys on the finishing line at M in Garching...

Just snagged this off ebay:



Sturtevant Richmont 2SDR-150I 1/4" torque wrench, 30-150 in-lbs.

Accuracy and repeatability counts on the small stuff too.
I'm gonna make one of those gw/matco hybrids next, great find.

No, the camshaft can. The valves push upward on the cam and can supposedly break the cam due to uneven pressure. So you use that tool to relieve the pressure slowly and evenly.

It holds the bearing caps down while you undo the bolts for cams. It keeps even pressure on them so that there is no way to brake them.

Ahh, cool. Do bearing caps like to snap if you don't take pressure off of them correctly? I've never worked on that before.

I just did this. Just got a 1/4 and 3/8 Gearwrench flex set, tossed the ratchets and replaced 'em with Matco 88s. I've actually been very impressed with Gearwrench stuff so far, but the 88 tooth ratchet is much nicer.

Can't wait to try 'em out. Should only be another day or two, seeing as I have an E30 and all.

Very nice, I ended up keeping the GearWrench selector switch, I thought it had a better feel. After seeing your pics I think I'm definitely going to pick up both the 1/4" and 3/8" flex head ratchets and hot-rod 'em. I always find my buddy's incredibly handy and I don't have any of my own.

Just wanted to update this thread with first hand information that the Matco 88 tooth rebuild kits I bought are a direct swap into the GearWrench 60 tooth ratchets. So basically, I got a full set of 88 tooth ratchets for ~$130 with shipping. The difference is night and day as compared to Craftsman and I highly suggest this "swap" to anyone.

Part numbers are as follows.

Matco 88 tooth rebuild kits:
AFR8TK (1/4")
BFR8TK (3/8")
CFR8TK (1/2")

GearWrench 60 tooth ratchets:
81011 (1/4")
81211 (3/8")
81304 (1/2")
