    Help me deside

Alright guys, ive owned a 89ix now for round about a year and i can honestly say i love the car but im at a e30 cross roads in my life. basically what ive come down to is that i really want a rwd platform with a swap (at least a s50) in the time that ive owned my ix its been riddled with maintenance issues that have been neglected by "po's"

So the deal is this i found a clean 4dr black e30 in manual which is originally what i wanted (picked up my ix because it was almost rust free and was basically what i was looking for). start to finish cost of car and swap id say roughly id be looking at 5-6k? what kind of reliability and fuel mileage can i expect of the car? how much in other maintenance will i be looking at in the future? ie: steering rack, wheel bearings etc.

This is the cross roads part. The original reason i got involved in the bmw world is that my buddy has a 328i sedan with some m parts swapped and a bunch of other work done. every time i get in his car i think to my self this is everything i need in a car (heated leather seats, duel climate control, rwd, with plenty of power, and near 20 city 30 hwy) now i could pick up a regular e36 for near the cost of a e30 and be satisfied. but if im looking to spend 5k or more on a swapped e30 setup why not just buy a e36m3 sedan own an m3 and call it a day.

if any one could give any sort of opinion of either or both models that be great. also any information of swapped e30s would be greatly helpful. personally i prefer the feeling of the e30 over e36 but id be willing to go e36 and get rid of all the maintenance/rebuild headaches of the e30 to go to something that i can just get in and drive and be 100% functional daily.

sorry for the long winded ramble its just time to make my choice and i dont want to make the wrong one.

Heres some picks to keep you guys interested

    My current:

Most likely the color i'll get if i buy one:

Basically what i want just with more sedan perhaps style 5s with a deep lip but ds2 are prob my favorit stock wheel

^this...I had an E36 M3 for about 18mos when I lived in NY. Great car, but didn't have the spirit of the E30, though it was comfy & quick. To a further degree, I just did some work on my old boss's E46 323i. Drive it for about 4 days and before then end of the 4 days, I was bored. It was comfortable, quiet, and cruised smoothly at 180km/h. But it couldn't offer the same driving experience as the E30.

e36m3 is the only other car id honestly ever be interested bmw wise aside from a euro e28 m5. the styling feeling etc is just totally lost in any thing after 1998. i valet as my full time job and ive been in my fair share of just about everything. e30 > all. But i need fuel mileage and reliability. at best my ix can get 20 mpg hwy city forget about it. after only a year im into my car close to 3k on top of what i paid for it and im disheartened by its lack of consistency. the car might run right maybe 3 days out of the week. its a very quaky car.

my first e30 s52 was probably the best car Ive ever built. It was dead reliable and I absolutely beat the living shit out of that car. thousands and thousands of track miles and never failed me once. Normal maintenance only. But you have to bring anything you buy up to snuff which I did,... Do that and any car will reward you

How much more work does your car need to be reliable? Might just want to dump some money into your ix to take care of all its troubles and make it a real nice ride. You can always turbo your motor. Theres a guy running a 600 hp turbo ix on here and has been only breaking front diffs here and there. You could build a less powerful motor and still have that the awesomeness of awd, fastness, and the e30 feeling.

yes but i need fuel mileage id like to be in the 25 average range m20 turbos cant be getting anything better then 20 at peak.

Also the issues with my car are hit or miss so its quite hard to diagnose the problem since there not a constant. like for instance it misfires really only in the rain.

If it misfires in the rain, you need new wires and to make sure you have the ditributor cap and cover on correctly.

brand new wire, rotor, cap, plugs. actually when i had these all replaced is when i started noticing the majority of my problems. m20s are good solid motors but not efficient or quiet in any way. also i live in center city Philly so i really dont have work space for the car.

Maybe but Id start cheap and do the cap first. I rarely see wires go bad. BMW makes an excellent set of wires and if you measure resistance and they are close forget about them and put your money elsewhere.. unless of course there is something drastically wrong allowing misfire under wet conditions like you suggest

Truth, I mention wires as my po removed heat shielding and installed ricer wires. They did the same thing op mentioned once I replaced them, no more misfire. My m42 wires are oem and seem origional, they are flawless so I can agree 100%.

Can I suggest that you find an m5x awd oil pan and do an s50 swap?

ive though about doing that quite a bit but swap costs are to high and im not sure the reliability of something so Frankensteined and so unpopular(as in not documented enough).
