What about NO. You are talking trash to the wrong person here about rotary engines.
I have owned more than 10 RX7 turbo's. I love rotary + turbo + track use. Great for top speed runs as well, racing beat and others have done well over 250mph on the flats; rotary powered.
Nothing better than 9,000 RPM ++ shooting fireballs bouncing the rev limiter. My prior personal experience with tracking turbo rotary engine cars has had LESS engine failures than my BMW piston motors + motorsports.
My 1988 10AE RX7 FC turbo was faster than most FD's; BNR stage 2 big turbo @ 12 psi with Ohlin's coilovers and Bride seats+ arc parts +cusco footwork and 2 way LSD
2700 lbs, 300rwhp, king of fireballs!!
My 1993 FD3s was RE Amemiya/HKS coilovers/HKS exhaust, ARC parts and also......a R1 edition.
rotary + turbo for open track > stupid american low rpm v8 any day.
IF I wanted a LSX powered car, I would purchase one. C5 Z06 or C6 z06 is great, my friends have them.
LSX + fd3s+ open track = ASS ALL OVER THE TRACK.
Local guy who is member at a track group I run with has a LSX Fd3s. When it's on the track, its R35GTR speed.....but its often getting pulled out of the gravel.
I need CONSISTANT LAP TIMES> not some fan boy sillyness, the chassis has to be designed to react to the powerband. FD3s+ LSX is just UNSTABLE, NO TRACTION!@!!!!!!!
almost all tracking I do is Laguna Seca, Infineon, Buttonwillow. Got to be able to battle all day long without loosing control, as your $$$$$ is on the line at the pro tracks. NO easy run off, I also race in the rain - infineon has standing water in the braking zone and a flowing RIVER across apex on turn 1.........
This was my last track weapon, e36m + alpha N + s54 @ 8,400 RPM.
shangsta' are you GOD foot or something? you been watching too much initial D lately? I can't control a car like you can.
I'm a realist, I cannot handle a LSX powered non corvette car.
Give me a C6 Z06 and i'll put down consistant lap times all day with it!
if you want an initial D track weapon that laps Laguna seca @ C5 z-06 pace, you need my old track monster

Ls1 is really only fast in a c5/c6 etc body. Pointless without the body, even a brilliant chassis like fd3s cannot handle lsx toruque as well as an Oem lsx designed body.
Last few vettes I drove put down power great, the one lsx swapped 94 rx7 twin turbo I've got to watch closely on many tracks around nor cal was either lapping with r35gtr's or in the gravel, spun out all the time.
No hybrid swap etc can put down lsx power quite like a vette. Pointless in this discussion, I feel it's overkill for e30/36
If you had a empty e92 m3
Chassis however..............that would be some killer spiff. E92m+lsx
I'm Not trying to build a car to get towed out of sand with, everyone gives you the onus look when you are wasting track time.
I would buy a vette if I wanted ls v8 power.Originally posted by Wanganstyle View Posthey guys-
Been DD'ing my 87 325e 5mt 4dr for a while now, and its great. all stock with 3.07 torsen LSD for rain; cabrio suspension to avoid bottoming the oil pan on speed bumps
I want to build a track car and am deliberating between selling or building the E30
I have a nice clean shell E36M sedan rolling body that I put a 4.10 torsen lsd into, was pondering doing a 2jz or LSX swap, or turbo M50.52.....but the body kinda feels numb. I did a season of trackdays with s52 powered e36m, and eventually did a s54 into that car alpha N but it was not worth the expense/cost/effort - car was too heavy! even no AC, CF sunroof weight was about 2950lbs without driver.
pondering stripping the hell out of the E36m or the e30 and building for track
e30 would keep the m20b27 and add i head + 524TD top mount setup with a GT28RS size turbine (probably from evo or RB25 parts bin)
e36 would get LSX or 2jz+single turbo swap, or a 1.9 M44/ 2.8 m52 with boost.
target would be 2700 lbs for e36m, 2300lbs for boosted 325e/i
which would be more fun? S52 power in e36 body is NOT enough. S54 has weight a bit too far up, was pondering a 4 cylinder turbo in the e36 for that reason...
furthermore, "what engine should i put in my car" threads suck.

Please read original post:
what car to track, e30 or 36? I have both, just looking for thoughts on feelings, not what engine to install. I think some people have reading comprehension issues....
I dont want to swap anything, I've done too many of those things.OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

No matter what is suggested, you'll shoot it to bits, that's obvious.

I have both E30 and E36, currently the E30 is off road at the moment, but the E36 will be a donar to that car. I'm currently removing the M52 2.8 and puttuning it into a tech 2 sport body over winter. Well thats the plan. And as you were main contributar to my S54 thread you'll know now what I'm doing with that!
The Subaru looks awesome but on a track such as Laguna Seca how did you find the sudden elevation changes in the car and pulking power? Thats why on the Nurburgring I re evaluated where I'm going with my E36 as it doesn't have the power to pull up hill unless yoy are really agressive with the revs and driving style. And as I had to drive the car home via 5 countries Germany, Holland, Belguim, Framce and then England I wasn't willing to kill the car to try out a more aggredsive approach.
I'd go for an M42 from an E36 and slam a turbo charger on it and get the power to 250bhp and put it into an E30 shell. It'll be cheaper than most suggestions and it was something I nearly did to my '93 318iS M3 GT replica I had 6 years ago due to the stronger internals of tje M42 over the weaker M44!
My opinion but I gave a feeling you may be slotting a Wankel into an E36 Lol

I absolutley love my LS1 E36 M3. Out of all the cars Ive had. out of all my previous cars, my 540whp turbo widebody e36, s50 e30, NA built S52 E36. This car has blown my mind in terms of speed, ease of maintenance, power, and especially TORQUE.
On Oct 2, I will be taking it to its maiden track event at CVR so I will see its capabilities and report back. But you cannot go wrong with an LSX E36

Very pretty, very fast. LSX sounds SO raw and gangster too!!
Honestly I dont think I can handle the torque, I do love the LSX though, C6 Z06 FTW!!!
E36M is getting a Right Hand Drive Conversion (thank you ABL Original Parts)
and S54
And some boost :)

Wankel is awesome, still want another FD...
Subaru was an epic Battle weapon, My RHD STi-RA V-limited (95) was 240 awhp and pretty good on climbs. Could have used another 50 hp but did manage to keep an Arial atom at bay behind me on laguna for 3 laps (heavy AWDrifting and torque FTW lol)
the scooby can pull a line @ corkscrew that gobbles up ground... e36m cannot although i did try a few times :P
@ laguna on the down hill from 7A to corner 9, it will gain 4 seconds on AWD grip vs a nice FR (Z06)
Also for turn 2 (Andretti Hairpin) a Rear drive biased AWD can double apex holding throttle and gain a second or so on the line, I have almost kissed the rear end of 911's many times there because they brake early and the scooby brakes LATE there, turns in brakes again and slings out on power.Last edited by Wanganstyle; 09-09-2011, 10:40 AM.OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Wouldn't be easier importing an E36 coupe from the UK and doing a RHD conversion from the parts. A 328i sport can be had for less than £1000 and importing the car as used parts a few hundred on top. Take the full RHD conversion, sell the engine and strip for parts??? Just somethingbthat may be cheaper. Your S54 sounds mental, good luck
