Old Toyota trucks are rock solid. There was an episode of Top Gear where Jeremy drove a old Toyota truck into a wall, tree, and the ocean; flipped it; dropped it from 20 ft; hit it with a wrecking ball; drove it through a shed; and put it on top of a building which was then imploded. They didn't replace anything, and it ran after all of that.

Where the hell? I've never seen that one.

I can vouch for Toyota truck durability.....I used to have an '89 standard cab 4x4 w/ V-6 & 5-speed. When I bought mine (from the orig. owner) it had just turned 80K miles. I owned that truck for 7 years and racked up another 100K+ miles on it before I sold it. During those years I did courier service for a law firm so most of those miles were city-driven (stop & go) miles. Worst mechanical failure during my ownership? One dead battery....that's it. I did have to replace things like timing belt, tires, brake pads, a clutch and shocks....but I consider those "consumables."

So there's a valid reason why they hold their value so well. These things can take a freakin' beating and keep going. Regular maintenance keeps them happy for 1000s of miles. Sometime within the next year I would like to buy another used 'Yota p/u and just use that for my daily driver and bump the E30 to "toy" status.

my roomate just picked up a late 90's model tacoma for like 12k and said he got a great deal on it. He said he could turn it for 15k but with 85k miles, great paint, and perfect interior - he knows he could never replace it for that price. Plus, he can drive it for a few years, sell it, and then get his money back - great trucks.

My friend has 2 trucks, an 81 and an 83. Both rock solid and are great off road trucks.

I actually want a mid 90's 4runner, but they are expensive :P
