          they are holding the piping together. the header is not one peice, it uses slip joints. this style is very common on race cars and race bikes. reduces the chance of header cracking from harsh vibrations. may also have somthing to do with the expansion of the pipes when hot. I am sure there are many other reasons too.

                      The Slant-6 E30 ran this last weekend. Went through two Slant-6 engines (spun bearings) and ran about 20 laps total on the first day. Packed up and went home.

                        Taken during my visit to the Porsche Museum. Prototype 917 engine. Naturally aspirated 16cyl (holy plug wires). The turbo 12-cyl proved to be more reliable and made more power (1200hp), so the 16 was never used in competition.
