Or it could be a 5mph difference if they are trying to run you off the road?

A 5mph difference is just a quick stab on the brakes if someone pulls out 20 feet in front of you. I think if you are passing fast enough that someone pulls out 2 car lengths in front of you you definitely can't stop in time, you are driving like a douche. I would not for a second go as far as to say that he deserved it though--we have all had our moments.

And what if the speed limit on the road is 50mph? Or 60mph?

Agreed. You should never be forced off the road by someone you are passing unless they are next to you. 15 feet of space is more than enough room to slow down unless you came up on them at a high rate of speed and decide to pass without looking. Pacing them and making sure it's safe doesn't sound like the MO in this scenario. If he did that, I doubt there would have been a problem.
Sucks about the car, but I bet the OP will be more aware of what's happening around them before they try to pass again.

Doesn't matter genius. That's the LIMIT. Always yield to the person in front of you. That's like saying it's OK to rear- end some one BC thay are traveling to slowly....
That's exactly why highways have minimum speeds and MULTIPLE lanes. This road didn't, therefore taking care to pass is the first priority.

The speed limit at that location is 45 MPH.
I hope when he gets the car dried out he will come back to Tennessee for the 2011 Smoky Mountain BMW Brodeo.

who said it was 2 car lengths?

how many of you have been in an accident? 20 feet isn't even enough for a human reaction time. even at 5mph things can happen faster than you think.

If one of the objects is stopped. In this case both objects were traveling at a rate of speed. he said 15 feet, which is a car length. at 5 miles an hour faster that is plenty of time to adjust as long as he wasn't passing at more than 15 mph faster. I don't see where you are missing the point. the car was in front of him with 15 feet of space. It wasn't like they were door to door. Applying the brakes while paying attention should have sufficed. Unless it was a reckless pass which in this case looks like it was IE, ending up in a lake, on what looks like a very easy road to pass on. also, is that a double yellow or a dashed yellow? I can't tell.

so you pass cars at 5mph? seriously?

15 feet isn't much at all. If you'd actually had the unfortunate experience of rear ending somebody, you'd know that.

It changes to a no passing zone roughly where the skids are.
