The 2.5's will crack or blow a head gasket, they're awful. If you can find one the best thing to do for the money is get an ej20t out of a 1989-1994 turbo legacy and throw it in a gc impreza. I had a friend that drove one of these until 300k and until he got in an accident, and it was still running. Other than that, a bugeyed rex is not out of your budget so you might be best off saving yourself the trouble and grabbing one of those.
100% correct, EX of mine owns a 98 2.2 Outback Sport with 67k on the clock. And her brother has owned two bug eye WRXs. The 2.0 WRX turbo is awesome and can make massive power with tunes and a bigger turbo with a bigger down pipe. One major upgrade is the STi 6 speed to get rid of the glass like WRX tranny. If you are thinking of pushing 300hp in a WRX buy the STi tranny =)

Just remember change that timing belt at 100k!

I've had two GC8 2.5RS and haven't had major issues with either of them. Yes the HG blow eventually but they're not awful motors when maintained. If you find one with a good service history and hasn't been super "modified" they're very solid and inexpensive daily drivers.

Power doesn't break transmissions, drivers do. My "glass" 2002 WRX trans never caused me ANY problems. After I sold my car, within three months the new owner started complaining about losing second gear and the engine burns oil (used amsoil as long as i've had it). I asked what he was doing to the car...

....drag racing against his friends EVO

There were so many hard to find parts in that car, some things no longer made like aluminum steering rack mounts (bypass the shit rubber and urethane bushings). Aluminum outrigger bushigns; the car had 22 pillowballs. Blood, sweat, tears.... I autocrossed the car, I ran it pretty well, but for some reason, i never had problems.

they are quite fun, and again the comment about the "glass" transmission is from people who cannot drive.

if you have some spare time check out rs25.com, heck here is a link to my old impreza i built.

Really like the 07 Forester Sports XT 5spd I had for awhile, sort of regret selling it... but if/when I get another it may just end up being an STI or WRX Wagon.

WRB = One of the best car colors of all time. I could see myself owning that wagon.

Love both of those cars, especially the wagon, which is idealy what a want. A friend of mine in highschool had a 2.5rs which is what got me interested in them, but i was already hooked on e30s. The only thing is that i'm not a big fan of hood scoops or rear wings.

my mom bought her outback ('00) with 130k miles on it. 1 old lady owner. same as her, lol. the lady claimed the engine had never been above 3k rpm. i believe her too. hah.

it now has 270k on it.

no problems to date. she changed the original clutch out at 190k. she is always up on her maintenance. but its been oil changes and..... thats it.

I have a 95 Legacy wagon (2.2) that is really slow, but it's the best car I've ever owned. I'm doing a major suspension overhaul and soon enough swapping it for a turbo motor.

I love my Subaru. I sold my E30 and kept the Leggy when I was buying my E36 track car.
