Premium for buying a Euro BMW?

Ok... Im in the market for a 1985+ 635CSi 5-speed. Out of the very few that seem to be worth buying (and I do mean very few) a couple of them are the higher compression engine Euro gray market cars. From what I have read these are very different beasts than the typical North American version. Although they are more expensive to maintain, and god help you if some old bitch rear ends you, I may be interested in owning something that unique.

Im seeing a premium for the Euro cars of about $4000 over what a similar American example would cost. Does that sound about right? Does that sound like too much?

    Let me know.

I know nothing of euro values, but I spent about 3 hours behind the wheel of a real M6 in about 1990.

    Sold me on BMW forever.

    Fun fun fun.

    'nuff said.

Yeah... I've heard there is a tangible difference, more than just a bling factor. my main concern is the interior on this one that I am looking at. I think the seats will need to be redone in leather, so that means Im going to loose sleep over finding a skilled leather craftsman. I would want them to look as stock as possible when finished.

If it's a euro 6 buy it! The Euro engine is perfect, as much power as your newer 3.5, Plus euro bumpers, which can't be added to U.S. sharks without lots, and lots of work(different bodies, you have to completly fab your own mounts). Plus it may have a Dogleg gearbox, I'd pay $1-2k over a simulor U.S. spec model but not 4k

if you've found one, and it's not too much more, I wouldn't worry too much about the interior. There are many good shops out there who can do a great job recovering. Someone on here had a BEAUTIFUL m6 (may not have been m, dont really remember) that they sold on ebay about a year ago, and his interior looked immaculate.

and there is definately a euro "cool" factor. I get on average 3 comments a week about my touring.

Well... the guy who had the Euro was definitely a crap smoker. Asked him a series of easy questions for any enthusiast and his reply was just "well... its obvious you are not interested in this car. The kind of questions that you are asking I would really only get into with a $15k+ car..."

Excuse me? Since when is saying "From picture 3 I see what looks like a bazooka subwoofer, do you have any stats on the stereo system?" or "can I get a picture of the VIN MY sticker inside the door?" It was through BimmerBrothers.net. They have some nice cars but for a group of "enthusiasts" they don't know shit about their cars.

Im currently negotiating with a guy in Indiana for his 1988 M6. He is a BMW CCA member, has 2 years worth of service receipts with a reputable independent BMW mechanic (he sent me pictures of the receipts). He was very honest about the things that need work on his car and offered to take as many pictures as I liked. Im hoping that by next friday I will be driving home in my new M6. So, out of about the 50 or so e24's available, filter out the fewer than that which are stick shift, i found 1 who was an actual enthusiast who had an honest understanding of what a 17 year old car will fetch now-a-days.

Keep your fingers crossed for me.

                Go you.

M6 is truly amazing. I believe I saw one at night local around here.
Can't be sure because it was moving too fast.

But as I have said... Im not going anywhere... R3V is my street corner now. The other reason why I chose the M6 over a similarly priced E36 M3 is because

1990 and earlier BMWs > all other BMWs.

The first M3... the first M5... the first M6... 2002tii... 3.0CSL... all awesome cars. I know BMW is in search of people with larger check books now, but the latest 3 and 5 series are horrible. Bangle exterior aside, their interior ergonomics are all levels of fucked up. I mean... the cup holders... has anybody else seen these? WTF. The driver pretty much has to lean over to the passenger side to get a drink.

Plus I prefer mechanical systems over electrical ones anyday of the week.
