Who here has a turbo'd e30 in Cali?

This could go in the forced induction section, but since it's about smog too I decided to put it here.

I know it's illegal, but who has one?

    I know dj buttchug has a turbo'd m42...anyone else?

If you register your car in a "rural" area you never have to smog it again. Since "rural" areas in California don't have a smog issue, they don't require biannual smog. Only when you buy and sell a vehicle.

I have every one of my cars registered at my house in Guerneville, CA (Russian River) and I've never had to smog them since. I've also heard you can open a P.O. Box in a rural area (a bunch of my dad's mechanics did it in Forestville) and register your car through there. Look on the DMV website for areas near you. SoCal has a lot less options IIRC.

Although this solves the smog issue, this doesn't help in regard to the police. You can still have your hood popped at any time. During regular traffic stops, I've had my hood popped atleast 15+ times over the past couple years. Ive heard on norcale30 if they find a snail, they can have your car towed on the spot.

Me too, to hell with all that mess. But good luck OP, if you have relatives out of state you could maybe register with them? Not sure how that works.

Good idea, but you can't do that either. My uncle used to have all his cars registered in South Dakota for yeaaaaaaars because of their cheap registration, and lax smog laws. He got pulled over recently and was given a few weeks to register his car in California.

Yeah, I can agree with that. I'm getting tired of all the bullshit in California, but then again, it has it's perks too.

How much is it to open a P.O Box? I might just do this later hmm

Come live in Wisconsin for a little bit.

                Hobbyist license plates

                Vehicles that qualify:
Vehicles that qualify for hobbyist registration are 20 or more model years old that have been altered or modified from the manufacturer's specifications. Homemade vehicles and vehicles that replicate a vehicle that is 20 or more model years old also qualify. Hobbyist registrations differ from collector registrations, which are available for vehicles 20 years old or older that have NOT been altered or modified from the manufacturer's specifications.

Hobbyist license numbers are assigned to the owner for a lifetime. Registration does not expire. A letter suffix is added to the number (i.e., 1A, etc.) for subsequent hobbyist vehicles owned by the same person. Hobbyist plates CANNOT be personalized.
and tell cali cops to go fuck themselves with your new wisconsin license plate.

                    This.

There was a time when I had my Evo registered out in the boonies b/c that zip code was smog exempt...There are some spots in SoCal but one has to search.

                      ?
You can make any turbo kit/build smog legal. The problem is visual.
To be legal here in California it has to be originally manufacture made. If a cop sees the snail or has any reasonable doubt, you will be sent to the state ref. And once there it has to pass inspections, so if you have a stupid muffler or cone filter your car is illegal to be on the road till it's factory.

Danny had one and felt the wrath of the law too. I think the mod of norcale30 has one, and Ryan G has his mtech 2 vert turbo'd. And I've seen two turbo'd cars in sac. Well, I had a turbo'd m20 that I bought for a grand, made it look pretty and sold it for 2 grand over here. I never did any smog stuff. Sold everything under the table etc etc.

LOL no way, That is a terrible suggestion!

Perhaps an engine swap from an old turbo 745i could be a fun project to keep the car looking OEM under the hood.
