Can you go into a bit more detail about this? How much does it cost for the plate? Can you also get insurance for it as a classic then?

Could you technically open up a PO Box in WI like these other guys do or do you actually need to be a resident of the state?

Classic car insurance, technically registered as a Street Modified vehicle (AKA Hot rod)
Everything's fair game. The only thing you need to maintain is the vehicle has to be recognizable as the original body. So it has to at least be able to be recognized as an E30. Pretty easy to do. Amongst a few safety laws.
P.O.Box, Doubt it will work.
Plate is 200 for the first one, plus 69.50 for registering it in the state, plus taxes on those two above. Takes about 6 months to get to you, MUST be mailed, so counter fee doesn't apply.
But, I could make a call and see if you could just get away with a social security number and a wisconsin address, say it's a second home, and where the car is.
No mileage restrictions.

And, probably shit tons cheaper insurance for you cali guys. The car would be registered in WI after all

You MUST also send a reason as to why you think it's a street modified, pictures of the car, all the receipts of how it became the way it is, and more. It's basically writing an essay asking if you can have the plates, and proving nothing is stolen. I had to send in the vin number of the engine in my car. Once you get it though, no need to maintain their knowledge of it.
