$5K budget E34 or E39? Help me R3V

E34...
plenty reliable and way better on looks.

E39's are boring looking (except for the M5)

This. I look at my E34 wagon and look at E39's....something just seems odd about E39's. they seem cramped compared to their predecessor.

E34, chipped, lose the stock muffler, our last e34 525I auto went 278K, M5 swbars, sweet. 540's too many tales about motors and trans,

I'd only consider an e39 if it was 540i with a 6 speed or M5.
