    Great...

I was on my way to school this morning like any other morning, and I spotted something in the middle of my lane. I was going probably 70mph so I couldnt really judge how high it was at the time, so I just tried to get it centered between my wheels so it would hopefully just pass under the car...

    WRONG

Turned out to be part of a driveline for a big truck. Talk about a hard hit... it felt like the front of the car lifted off of the ground. I immidetely thought "oil pan" and pulled off of the highway, turning the car off before I even came to a stop. What I know of so far: oil pan's got a huge hole, left control arm is garfed, underbody massively crunched in (fuel lines are destroyed), rear exhaust section is smashed, and the diff is damaged and now leaking.

The good news: a man from some concrete company was pulled over right near me. He claimed responsibility for the driveline being in the road, and the company is going to pay for all the damages. The car is on the way to the dealership right now to get an estimate. My guess is it isnt going to be cheap, but oh well, it wont be coming out of my pocket. :?

I probably would have done that if I hadn't have been going 70mph in the dark in busy traffic. It just came up on me pretty fast...

You are very lucky, he could have said nothing and drove off...leaving you shit outta luck.

At least you know you don't have to pay for it.

Sucks to hear about your car. . . I hope everything turns out fine - How far is your car dropped? Would stock ride height clear the object you hit? I have no idea how big this part is you are talking about :?:

There are certain times when you can do absolutely nothing but hit the brakes and run into the object head on, so I know how it is. But you were really lucky to have the guy take responsibility like that; people who do that are rare nowadays. Hope you get your car back soon.

Actually, I imagine if he lost his drive shaft, he would have had a pretty hard time just driving off.

Not surprising that he took responsibilty for it. I'm sure his company is insured, and it's not like it was his fault for the incident.

                      Why?

Unless he's going to be doing major mods to that m42, or going with a motor swap, the small case 4.10 is just fine. All the large case is going to get you is more weight and driveline loss.

I believe he had it in the back of his truck. It was pretty huge actually, must have been for a big rig or something.

As for the diff, I will probably look into having it swapped with a small case LSD instead of my open if it comes down to replacing it. I do wanna do a S50 swap someday, but a 4.10 would be a bit too wild when combined with an S50 drivetrain. I am thinking about maybe putting down the difference and getting a Supersprint though... :)

Weather or not it was the person's fault for letting a driveshaft fall out of the back of his truck (I'm going to guess because of ignorance), its still a matter of liability. From the impression I got, I think the company might just pay for the damage out of pocket if the repairs arent going to be too expensive. But from what I saw when I had the car up on the lift at school, its going to be big money to get everything right again. Hell, I'm just glad that hes taking responsibility for it.

As for my car's ride height, I have M3 springs and 10mm lowered front spring hats. Its probably about an inch lower all around.

When I read the post I figured it fell out of the back of his truck, and he pulled over to get it. Not that it was his drive shaft from his truck he was driving......

well, at least its getting fixed... most of the time you end up eating it as a comprehensive claim on your own insurance, but you won't have to do that now.

good luck getting it right again!
