      somethings not right.
      M42 in gutted E30: ~2300lbs ~140hp
      M50 in E36: ~3100lbs ~190hp

It is not that far fetched, and he didn't lift for a lot of corners that a lot of other cars did. If you check 9:20ish you'll see a douchebag in a 964 targa doesn't let him by because he can't catch up down the straightaways.

Make him nervous, he'll spin out sooner or later.

Ha. He's my friend! I want to keep up with him, not wreck him. If I was going to go that route why would I work so hard when a pit maneuver is just a quick tap away???

So the comments here make it seem like a huge feat requiring lots of money. Oh well. I'll just drive my car and enjoy it. Upgrade it as I see fit. I have pondered what it would take to swap in an e36 rear suspension, but I don't have the time, fabricating knowledge and extra garage space a project like that would require.

I have wondered about an e36 rear on an e30 as well. I have no idea what it would take or if it is possible. It would be more cost effective to buy an e36 than swap over the whole rear suspension I would imagine. However, I just don't like the looks of the e36. The Mcoupe suspension is a direct swap, however it is just beefed up e30 stuff. It doesn't have better geometry in order to eliminate the camber and toe change the e30 suffers from.

there's ways to modify the rear trailing arms to help eliminate that.

I would imagine there is, but I don't know what it is. Can it compare to the e36 suspension?

they used to do it to the dtm cars. someone did a write up about it on s14

*edit* that was before they started using custom arms and ect

Wasn't that when they changed from the 15 degree trailing arm to the 12 degree trailing arm in the race car and it made a huge difference in the alignment under cornering?

later on they did that. the early dtm car cars used simple and cheap reinforcements.

Now those kits are readily available on the market, wouldn't there be a different way to alter the geometry?

I'm sure that a body shop could bend the stock arms or something. but the reinforcements that were seen on those arms and cheap and fairly easy to do.

Makes sense, I would love to see some one make a legit 12 degree setup, but I would imagine it would require some low offset wheels to compensate.

OK here is the deal... i think that you guys are overrating the cayman a bit... for example at the nurburgring the cayman has a best time of : 8,16 ... this guy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHIlVLmgB2I does it in 8.26 ... and he is no proffesional driver and has about 210 hp... the track is approx 20 km long... i think with more power and the some rubber and some 5000 $ suspension that they use in german hillclimb ... that cayman is gonna eat dust..Just my opinion....:P
