the third light is just extra lights. which may help someone not run into you- but legally you just need regular brake lights/ one on each side of the rear of the vehicle. the whole point of break lights(and turn signals) are for the other drivers. so they know where you are and what you are doing

you sure? i got pulled over in my old 84 318i for not having a 3rd break light. i told them it was a 84 and that it didnt come with one ( truth 83/84's didnt have them ) why they pull me over?

i think so?? i just know my 84 didnt have one and i got pulled over for that. at least in california. ive been meaning to put a coupe trunk on my vert and delete my 3rd break light but dont want any stupid reason for the popo to pull me over
