    Issue with battery (corrosion)

So attempting to do my very first Head Gasket and profile gasket job today I came to a realization of a 20 year old car. The negative battery terminal had corrosion all over the crossmember.

This doesn't look very safe, and when attempting to remove them, they seem to have transfused together.

    Any insight?

    thats the positive...
try baking soda and coca cola to disolve most of it...then a bit of hose/water....wire brush to clean it...and after its all back together, use some hair spray to coat it...

Thanks, I found out that the wires were crossed. I just disconnected the negative and was proceeding with the HG. After all is said and done I'll clean up the positive terminal.
