What do you think of royal purple fluids?

Castrol GTX 20W50 on 1800 mile change intervals.

That's genuinely stupid and a waste of money to change your oil that frequently.

I use royal purple in my Focus, used Mobile1 for awhile and made the switch. I use synchomesh or max in my transmission too. Works great, wouldn't say it's any better than Redline though. I use Castrol in the E30 though.

I think you'd be crazy to do so when there are FAR better choices available for about the same money.

I heard redline is a pretty good trans fluid.

Agreed. Don't discount Swepco gear oil either. It made a huge difference in my Rover trans. Not synthetic base, but their additive package is top-shelf.

I sometimes used that in my Land Rover. It's designed for diesels so it's supposed to have a lot of detergents in it, which is supposedly good if you have a lot of miles.

The rest of us who drives our e30's on the street, stick to a quality name brand like Mobil 1, or Castrol (if theres no more Mobil 1). Street oils have detergents to keep your engine clean when you are running your A/C idling, or driving in traffic, or driving is super high heat at low speed, and all sorts of bad stuff for engines. It's cheaper because its mass produced, not because its cheaper.

If you have ever torn apart an engine whose owner swears by royal purple or redline race oils, you'll know why. After about 30,000 miles there's a thick dark brown coating all over everything. Race oils are not meant for the street and were never meant for the street. Leave it on the track, where it belongs.

Ummmmm....you DO realize that Amsoil and Redline offer a separate line of motorsports oils without the detergent packages? But by far the majority of the products are meant for the street, with far better base stocks and additive packages than what Royal Purple & Mobil1 offer. Amsoil has always stated that everyone has access to the same materials to "build" oil with. Redline states the same thing. They claim no magic, just quality. The top-tier oils are more expensive to buy because...they are more expensive to produce. Simple fact. That is not to say that Mobil1 or Rotella are bad oils. They're great and I won't deter anyone from using them. They just aren't as good as the top-tier brands.

I agree that motorsports oils should stay in motorsports. However, in Swepco's defense, they never claim to be a motorsport oil. They are a heavy-duty, long-life oil designed for off-highway trucks and mining--chock full o' detergenty goodness.

I use Redline exclusively in my red car, Except my engine oil, that's 20/50 shell conventional.

James Crivellone Uses royal purple exclusively on his white Mtech1.

All I can say is the RP we installed in his transmission was so thin compared to the Redline. On top of that it seeped constantly.

Just one personal experience he drives his m-tech a lot more then I drive my red car, but he was not leaking from the transmission before putting in the royal purple, so its pretty obvious that its the gear oil itself.

Personally I give royal a big thumbs down and redline a big thumbs up.

I get RP at work for cheaper than Castrol GTX. I pay cost+10, shows you the markup on it. Still would use GTX on the Bimmers and Mobil1 on the newer cars.
