If you have an autozone/advance near you, they will rent you the compressors. I've used them multiple times (and own a set). They work well and you can use an impact on them.

I bought some from Advance AP. They're pretty shitty, but get the job done.

^This. Tell them what you're doing. Then you "buy" it, keep the receipt & return it when you're done for a full refund. It's a great deal.

You only need them for stock springs, no sense owning them if you aren't going to use stock suspension again.

You don't need a spring compressor. Just put a couple tires in front of the strut mount.

I use mine more often that I like. Maybe I should stop lowering cars, then buying stock ride height cars...

don't really need one. lay the strut on the ground, with the strut mount pointing away from dogs/old people/small children/E30. stand on the spring. use impact to undo the strut nut. it'll pop free, not all that scary really, and you'll be done in 30 seconds.

honestly, spring compressors scare me, especially the free/rented ones. they're always beat to shit. I'd hate to have that thing fail with 300+lbs of force compressed and smash me in the face. when you just pop the spring free in the way I suggest, it's really only the dead coils that are being decompressed, way less force is involved.

you won't need a spring compressor to put in lowering springs, either.

just get a c clamp and clamp down the springs the best you can. get a vise grip and get it as tight in the middle of the strut. stand clear.
