    Any Australians in da house?

I was talking cars with buddy from Australia. He told me that down under the government does not allow people make any modifications to cars. Including lowering, or lifting cars. I had no idea.

I asked him about professional high end tuners like Dinan, Brabus or Ruf. He says that if the car looks modified chances are you will get pulled over by the cops all the time. At that point you will need to have all the documents stating that the car has been tuned professionally.

    Crazy.

I was wondering if there's Australian R3v members, and how do they deal with the urge to modify their e30.

I understand that importing an older car down there is also very difficult.

Here's a really good pdf doc outlining the laws here in Queensland, but it's different state to state.

      http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/c7..._vehicles2.pdf

"Any point of the car can't be lower that 100mm to the ground" is the main one the cops will try to get you if your car looks lowered. and exposed 'pod' filters.
As for lowering - "The ride height measured between the rubber bump stop and the corresponding metal stop may be reduced by no more than 1/3"

Saying that, here in qld you only need a road worthy test if you're buying or selling a vehicle. After that you never need one while you're driving it. So as long as you dont get pulled over, you can be driving a shitheap for years without getting inspected.

Not exactly true... There are a lot of regulations with modifications particularly with young drivers, and limits to ride hight/rim size etc, but often they are not rigorously enforced..

Pretty much all engine modifications have to be engineer certified or you can get royally fucked over if there is any kind of insurance claim...
All modifications are supposed to be reported to your insurer (including steering wheels, gear knobs etc lol), and if you try and make a claim and they find an unreported modification they can refuse to pay out... however most insurers wont bother/notice things like different rims/steering wheels.. ride hight etc

It's not too bad really... but I gather its no where near as lenient as in some parts of the states. Particularly with lifted trucks etc

Bro trucks get away with murder all the time. Ive seen a few trucks lifted so high they cant see the car in front of them at a stop light.

Not true. Its getting harder but you just have to play the game.

Check some of the BMW project cars on ECCA http://forums.eurocca.net/forumdispl...W-Project-Cars

Lots of engine conversions, turbos etc.

Here in Vic we have guidelines to work with when doing engine conversions. Most of it is common sense. Like if you wanted to put a blown big block in an E30, then no its not going to happen. But 4.0 V8 conversion was acceptable to the engineers that sign off on engine conversions.

Ive never been hassled in any of my E30s even when being illegally low and illegally loud (in the past ;) )

They more hassle the younger driver who do stupid mods and drive in a reckless manner on the roads.

Plenty of modded cars in AU

Spacers / 'Modifying the hub' is another thing thats a no-no down under.

Also with regard to the modifications, they (in NSW its the Roads & Traffic Authority) classify mods as minor or major. Any minor mods don't need an engineer's signature, but your insurance company may not cover certain types of, or over a certain number of mods. Major mods do require an engineers certificate, and again depending on your insurance company may or may not be covered.

As for how strict it is in Aus, I think the UK is tougher than here.

even with all these laws, I definetly saw more modified car/trucks in AUS than the states, id say the car culture is bigger there

I love AUSTRALIA, perfect weather, beaches, sky, great people, its like paradise

So hard to move there though, Picky bastards

                      noob question about centre caps!

i'm from australia, there is massive modified car scene here... However cops are very strict when it comes to illegally lowered or high powered vehicles.. especially for p plate drivers (probationary). That said, they mostly go for the common skyline, silvia or local modified holden or fords
