connections are the same, just gotta watch which fuel gauge/tank you have, as well as the tach coding plug.

both brands are interchangeable, but as edler said, check for early vs late model tanks. also, i think eta clusters don't have coding plugs, but i don't play with those often.

plugs are on the right front corner, white in color. early clusters have them in the rear directly in the tach

For some reason a late model speedo out of a vert runs 10mph fast in my 325is.

eta's have coding plugs that will limit your engine to 5k rpm. really early e30's like the 84-85's didn't have coding plugs. vdo and motometer are interchangeable. hope this helps.

Really? All my searching led me to believe I had to have a motometer replacement cluster for my car. If I can just swap in a VDO cluster that will be much easier since they seem far more common.

Get a cluster from the same or close year and model for best compatibility.

Otherwise you may need to swap the fuel gauge and coding plug.

early clusters also had coding plugs, but they are different from the late model cars.

early clusters also have crappy si boards as well.

Funny.... i bought an 89 325is with this same problem. Popped the cluster apart thinking the PO had messed with it. No signs of foul play, but i decided the easiest fix was to move the needle so that it reads 10mph less :)
