    Speed 3 > GTI.

    Cheaper, faster, more durable.

I loved mine. Only ditched it because SWMBO said if I'm going to build another E30, it had to go for a truck.

My unbiased opinion is to get the 318 plus why invest in a depreciating asset

Asking a question like this on a model specific forum is bound to have completely biased results.

If you can swing it, I'd go for the GTI.

You're all wrong. Get a mint late E30 body and an M52 motor!

Heres an opinion from someone who has had both. I dont know what the guy who said the gti had turbo lag was talking about, it is the complete opposite. In fact i think the the low spool is part of the cars problems with torque steer. I love the gti, it makes a nice dd, with good amenity's, and more than enough power to scoot about town. It is a fun car but its fwd and has all the associated downfalls. The 318is is a great little car, and provides you with a feel you will not find in any other car. Its light, gets good gas milage, and they are pretty reliable. It is slow and requires you to string it out if you want to get any kind of speed. That said if you live anywhere that has some nice roads to hit up then the 318is will reward you and make you forget about alot of its downfalls. In fact the gti is going in favor of another 318is

I've ridden in a friend's MK6 DSG GTI and they are decently quick. He still wants my 318is though.

I would go with the cheaper staying out of debt car. Unless you need something safe for the fambamily or your simply just tired of working on an elderly car. I would go with the e30 hands down. fresh black is the tits. Besides threw my m42 out the window months ago :)
