    Please help me.

Sold my 1991 318i this afternoon. Guy flew up from North Carolina to buy it - paid cash, and headed out.

Called me a half hour ago.

    Timing chain snapped.

Right now he's getting it off the Mass Pike somewhere safe.

What can I do here? Is there anyone near exit 6 on the Pike? How long would it take to put another M42 in, and is there anyone that can help me?

I've been up since 1pm yesterday, and I'm trying to go on vacation tomorrow afternoon. This is not a good week. The only resolution is that the guy is real cool about it, and isn't holding it against me personally.

Man, this is like the 6th one of these I've seen in the last two months.

How many miles on the motor, ~175k?

Swing wild, brake later, don't apologize.

The chain was noisy as hell when I bought it and when he picked it up, but I was hoping it was just the tensioner. Guess I was wrong...he said he was just driving along at 65-70 and heard a snap and the engine gave out - won't start.

Adam was nice enough to offer his old m42 for barely anything - so I'm gonna clean his motor up and throw it in, do a clutch while I'm at it. I could really, really use the help on that in a week or two - just a heads up for anyone who'd be willing to save my life.

216k. Sucks. Even chains aren't immune to breaking. These are a zero tolerance motor correct?

Round here it's the taillight warranty - effective until you can't see the taillights.

But, I'm not that kind of seller. In fact, to make the best of this situation, I'm swapping the motor in for free, taking $100 off the original purchase price, picking him up tomorrow morning in Sturbridge and bringing him to Logan for a flight, and splitting return airfare with him.

          It's how I do business.

It's a few dollars off what I was making - to make a guy who's had a rough day a little happier. To me, the customer's happiness is more important than more money in my pocket. I know I'd want some help if I were in the same position. Yeah, I may be going well over and above the norm for a situation like this, but What am I supposed to do, tell the guy "sorry, thanks for the cash, good luck!"

Put yourself in his shoes. He flies up to MA, gets his car, and doesn't even get out of the state before the engine blows. Now you're in some hotel in Western MA, and you've got a car with a blown engine. What would you expect from the seller? Nothing? I offered to refund him in full and just find another buyer later on, but he loves the car and really wants to buy it. And with everything I'm doing, he sees I'm a standup guy and respects that I'm willing to go this far. HE keeps apologizing for inconveniencing ME!

I'll be around all next week. Let me know what day you're swapping the engine in.

Thanks man - I get back Tues, and Sat/Sun are shot - and then I'm heading to CT with Langsten - we'll see what happens.

With a few of us, how long do we think it's gonna take us?
