I think the spare in my trunk is... original

    Guys,

I took my spare out for the first time since owning the car to clean it up and made some interesting discoveries.

The tire for one was cracking and had a plug in it, but aside from that it was a Goodyear Eagle NCT 65, which I can't find any info on its production date.

The DOT code shows 206. I did some research and when the code is just three letters, it signifies that it was made in the 20th week of the tear 1986 or 1996. My car is an 86' so I assume this is probably spot on.

Some pretty freaky shit finding the ORIGINAL (though used) spare tire in the trunk. Can anyone confirm 206 is accurate for those potential years... and does anyone else find that they've come across this as well?

It also says it was made in Luxembourg.

Look on the other side of the tire for a longer DOT code.

You think it's weird that the original spare tire is still with the car (not weird), or that the factory tires were Goodyears?

Not everybody rotates the spare in service with the other tires (I don't). I sent my '90 off to the boneyard a few months ago, but kept the spare; original Pirelli barely used on a pristine bottlecap. I also kept the spare out of my '85 745i because the guy that bought it couldn't have cared less. Original Michelin TRX, never used.

That the original was still with the car. Aren't these things supposed to be replaced something like every 6yrs? I was under the impression rubber deteriorates and regardless of whether it's been used or not, it has the potential to dry up and begin to crack.

Meh, it's just a spare. They don't crack and dry up as a rule either; the spares I kept still look factory fresh. That said, I wouldn't go looking for four original spares to put on a car and go driving around.

the original tires are pirelli p6s.

you can find them in the trunk of junkyard cars every now and again.

Eh... My 70 GMC Pickup had the original unused spare still tucked up under the bed when I bought it.

My spare was unused and as far as I know had never been removed from the spare wheel well.

Pretty sure each of the 4 e30s I've owned has come with the original spare tire.

My Rabbit had Continentals from the 80s all around when I got it last year. I drove around on them for a while very cautiously until one split. :)

My spare is a nitto neo gen on a senica 16 x 8 rim. It matches the other rims, I threw the spare bottle cap away.
