It's never legal to exceed the posted limit. It's not even allowable to avoid an accident.


Speed limits are not "suggestions."

The basic speed law means you can't drive 65 on a windy road in the snow regardless of the posted limit being 65. It does not mean you can drive 70 on a posted 65 because it's straight and sunny.

aaaah both you guys are right and that's what i meant. i never did say you can drive over the speed limit through a dense fog or on a windy road in the snow. i said you can drive a little over the speed limit if it's safe to do so. you can totally get away with driving 10 mph over the limit in a 40 mph zone if its a sunny day, minimal traffic, smooth and dry road.

all the people who say shit like this are just trolling. getting a ticket for being 5mph over the posted speed limit is lame as shit. you all drive faster then the posted speed limit and you know it. most people drive at least 5mph over. stop being so self righteous. you would be a bit pissed as well.
edit: if you can prove that by driving over 5mph you were not endangering anyone or their property and were driving safely for the road conditions I am sure the judge will drop the case. 5mph is laughable. i also suggest you do this by written declaration. if you go to court the cop gets paid for showing up. if you do it by written declaration the cop gets paid nothing for doing his paperwork and proving his case, thus cutting back on the chance that he will try at all. read all the speed laws for washington and write yourself a nice fat argument. i dont know what the laws in wa say but here in cali you have the right to do traffic school and get your fine reduced even after the judge decided against you the first time.

Yeh it is lame and dose suck but once again he was speeding. Why is that hard to understand. Law states around the world not just USA that the speed limit is the maximum speed you are allowed to drive on that road. If you are 1mph over then have broken the law. I drive 5-10km/h every where I drive if I get a ticket well that is my own fault.

Cops are people who have bad and good days just like everyone else. That is why there is a court system if you think what happened was unfair because the Cop was having a bad day or being a dick take it to court.

It is like comparing someone who steals $500 from a register at a supermarket and someone who steals loaf of bread. While the two have a very different impact on all involved it dose not mean that the person who stole the loaf of bread should get away scott free.

On saying that at $90 fine I think is a waste of time they would be better making you do an hour or two of community service or something like that.

Second thought on this is entering on an onramp. To my knowledge (more than the previous statement) it is legal to "speed" when merging from an onramp.

the posted speed limit is merely a 'suggested' speed to drive at. you can drive a little over, no problem. 5 miles over the limit is totally fine given that the road and weather conditions and amount of traffic allow it to be fine, in other words, safe. i'm not sure how it is in other states, but in california we have the 'basic speed law' which in short states that you can only drive at a speed that is safe and not endangering others and 5 mph over the limit is not dangerious imo, but that's just me and i'm no cop. but if it was sunny, a nice and dry paved road, and light to medium traffic, 5 mph over doesn't mean shit and i personally think you should fight it.

sorry i meant to say "fcked me over", they raised my rates before i finished my course. then when i finished the course refused to return my rate. some back and forth i got it back to normal. That was a waste of time too because i got another speeding ticket and it raised anyways.

I contest speeding tickets on a daily basis. Have done enough research on this topic to write a fucking thesis and get a PhD. So far I have gotten away with 80 per cent of my speeding tickets. The ones I lost were because I was too lazy to show up to the court and make the judge's head dizzy with my elaborate explanation of why the douche that cited me was wrong and I am right. The concept is quite simple: Is your time worth more than 95 bucks or not. If the answer is yes, then request to go to court, plead guilty and enjoy the 30 per cent discount they give you on your citation. If the answer is no, then PM me and I'll teach you how to get out of it. If you want to fight it, it will take 3 full days out of your schedule. Is that worth 95 bucks or more? I would say fuck yeah since I'm a med student and every second of free time I have is worth a gem. If you are convinced to fight this, then plan accordingly. Citations are disgusting. Everyone on this thread that told you yeah it's your fault man up and pay the money and quit bitching is less of a man than they think they are. If my fellow man gets a citation I sympathize, regardless of whose fault it was. If you are too cute to sympathize, well have your testicles examined, chances are they haven't quite descended yet.

I live in Illinois where the sign that says "Welcome to Illinois" should have a hand with it's palm open to recieve money! I was in Vernon Hills with my girlfriend in the car around 8:00 pm when I got pulled over for doing five miles an hour UNDER the limit! The guy says "You were going a little slow back there". He didn't give me a ticket but did check my DL and insurance. Let me see you're papers. (probable cause).

The toll will increase by 100% soon! That's $.80-$1.00 if you have a Speed Pass, If you pay cash it's $1.60-$2.00! Also some of the on ramps and off ramps have $.15/$.30 (Speed pass), $.30-$.60 cash! The speed limit is 55mph, should be called Speed (p)ass.

Try driving though IL with a 3/4 truck at the speed limit with outta state plates. I hate IL.
