HOw to check codes on 1988 325is

I have 1988 April built 325is. How do I check codes? I did research and found out that put key to on position (do not turn car on) and press gas paddle five time quickly. I tried that but my check engine ling is not flashing.
    Car is running very rich.

Do you have a 173 ECU? The 153 does not support it.

If you do have a 173, Chances are its your TPS then.

I will check what ECU I have. But what is TPS? Do I need to replace it?

        Throttle position sensor.
If you have a 173, and stop test fails to work, chances are it's the TPS not sending/sending a bad signal to the ECU.

Is there a way to check if throttle position sensor or switch is bad?

tps is on the bottom of the throttle body and you can check it be testing for continuity at idle and they at full throttle at the pins on the connector. check bentley for which pins i can't remember which one for sure

With a BMW specific code reader. I know BavAuto carries it and I believe Pelican Parts does as well.

I believe 88 comes with a 153 DME, which has very limited stomp test code capabilities. For the full sheebang, you need the 173 DME from 89+
