Great cars -- not powerful by today's standards but they're light and can be set up to handle great by virtue of mid-engine placement. A lot of the engine/drivetrain parts are VW, so maintaining them doesn't have to be that expensive. Just be sure to check for rust -- that's where you'll spend money if you're not careful.
Good luck!

Used to have a bunch of 914's but have trimmed it down to just one. The rust issues are no joke. Very fun cars to drive, and they handle amazingly. Also, you can drop in a 911 flat six and really make them fly. Actually people drop all sorts of silly engines in 914's, from RX-7 Wankels, to Chevy 350's.

i have a 74 914-6 (conversion) and i can tell you almost NONE of the parts are VW, lots of them will bolt on to a VW though.
off the top of my head, for sure the inner door handles and the ignition switch are indeed VW, there are other parts, but it is a short list.
rust in the interior floor boards from leaking seals, rust anywhere under the battery (from battery acid leaking) and sometimes into the rockers and the first places to look when you find one. the rest of the car stays pretty solid.
when i bought my shell for the conversion it already had the battery tray replaced (not uncommon), after driving it for 5 months, the front rear control arm mount on the body started tearing away. it had rust damage that had been painted over and was rusting from the inside out. luckily i caught it before i wrecked the car.

My old man has a '73 914-4 2.0
It's a gorgeous car and is absolutely a blast around town, up mountain roads and around a track.
They certainly have rust issues as der affe stated above, around underneath the battery tray and can even span as deep as the rear suspension mounting point.
I love the 914 and I've always wanted one. But at 6'2" and just over 200 lbs, I'm too big to comfortably fit in them. Also, I have yet to find one around here that's not plagued by rust. I've seen a few that looked great, but were rotting underneath.
