Air hammer is what kill it. An impact is short bursts of air. An air hammer is what eats up air. Figure you're going to use all that cfm rating. Im all about getting a Champion, Emglo, Quincy, etc but if you're real tight on money the 21 gallon vertical compressor from Harbor Freight will work. I used to have this one. You'll get through about one axle nut, or 2.5 rivets in a GMC Jimmy before you don't have any air left and it kicks on. But mind you, you HAVE to wait till its pretty much done before you continue with your work or you'll burn it up. Those valves are free floating, not true reed like an IR Type 30.

The old ones were. The new ones are nice, but they've bumped the speed up using 3600 rpm motors. The old ones were 1750 motors. The problem is they never redesigned the pumps to run faster. So they are great, build pressure faster, but wear out quicker.

If I had my choice it would be a Champion R15.

This is the biggest IR i've worked on. IR XLE. They are in the 150 - 300 hp range. IR used to make bigger.

I also used to work on these Joy WN112's with my dad. My dad is not in the picture lol but its good for a size reference.

In old paper mill towns in Massachusetts, some places still run these as they are more efficient than rotary screw (they make air on the up and down stroke hence "double acting.") Lately tho, the cost of maintenance and parts has been retiring these bad boys. The Joy's were so well made, when they unloaded, you could balance a penny on end on the heads.
