    Powder Coating and new decal

I have been collecting powder coating equipment for a while now on the super cheap. For those of you that have done this, yes I know my gun sucks but for starting out it is the best option. So anyway, today I finally got to give it a shot and I am very pleased with the results I got from my budget set up.

I got an oven off CL for $30. and a powder gun off Amazon for $40. Then I ordered $70 worth of powder because there are so many cool colors.

The first thing I coated were some pieces for my brother-in-law. He turns pens on a lathe. Makes them out of all kinds of wood and other things. Lately he has been making them out of AK-47 shells. So today we coated a few for his up coming show. Here are the results

While I was spraying those I decided to spray a couple of my wrenches to use as samples and also to use as a measure of durability since my wrenches will get beat up a lot.

Here are some shots of the set up.

This is my 5 minute spray booth. Yes that is an e30 comfort seat/powder coating comfort seat.

This is the oven we got. Bought it without testing it but it worked great

Here are just some shots of the process

P.S. sorry the pictures were all taken with a phone. The first one was taken with an old flip phone, the rest with my thunderbolt. I think they came out ok though

Some of them are AK brass and some are 223 brass. The 223 stuff was to test as this was the very first time I sprayed anything.

The gun is a craftsman cheapo and the I got most of that powder from Columbia Coatings

thats what I was thinking at 1st too but the taper on the lower part of the case just looks like too much, that and the rim just looks a little to thick to 54r (could be though) its why I think it looks like 303 myself.

Edit to the edit: On second thought I think I was right the 1st time, 7.62x54r

I think that is a very ingenious idea to use the gun shells..bravo!!! they look great!!!

as for the wrenches. they probably won't hold up to the continuous use. Powder coat can still chip; if dropped or hit a certain way. Wondering if you are using primer at all? I deal with a shop that primes their products before coating.

No I am not using primer, and in all my research I haven't really seen anybody using primer. Is it a powder primer or a paint? I did some two stage stuff but just coat and clear.

I don't expect the wrenches to hold up forever but I was surprised at the toughness. Less than an our after cure I started throwing them on the ground and hitting them against each other to see how they would take it and it didn't do a thing to them.

I am trying to shop around for powder some but so far I can't tell too much of a difference in it. That link has it about as cheap as I have seen though, thanks!

If you get a big enough oven, sure ;)

Normal sized ovens are pretty big once you remove all of the trays/what not.
