    84-86 vs 87 325e any difference?

i have been reading on 325e and some say 84-86 325e have a different fuel pump system which are not as reliable as the 87. true or false? is there anything else different between those two?

Early model 325e's have a type of fuel cooler tied in with the ac system that they get rid if in the 87 325e

Early ones also had 2 sensors mounted on a bracket on top of the valve cover. The 87 just has a bracket to support the idle control valve.

87 model year or production? My 87 E had the fuel cooler but my 84 E doesn't. The location of the CPS and Speed sensor is different between those models you are correct.

Also steering knuckle was different. 84 has non-adjustable knuckle, meaning you can't modify it for steering rack swap.

            Also different ECUs. 021 (84) and 027 (87)

Horn locations are different on the 84, its next to the PS reservoir and the 87 is under the passenger headlights.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Reliable? hmmmm I'd say 87 simply because it's newer lol. There are insignificant differences between early and late ETA (not 88 Super ETA). 86 on had the round C101 connector so you can convert to Motronic 1.1/1.3 easier =]. Another difference is the early 84-85 cars came with a plastic idle control valve while the later ones came with a metal adjustable valve. This doesn't mean you won't find a later valve on an 84-85 today since it's likely been changed at some point. I remember the early cars had issues with ICV and the idle control unit going bad. Maybe they remedied the "problem" in the later cars? who knows. The later 86-87 ETA's should have the big flange driveshaft (manual) as well, that only came on certain models. Another thing I always liked about 86-87 ETA's over the 84-85 is the sidemarker lights and bumper bellows didn't get wavy. There's also premium stereo and the 'S' package offered in the later cars.

what barry said above ^^ 84/85 etas did come with sport seats since there was only a 318i or a 325e at the time. Not sure if any 84/85 ever came with a option of LSD.

my 87 wasnt a ES but did come with prem. sound and 2.93 LSD along with the gas cooler.

ALSO 86/87 etas came with dual mass flywheels
