I run 10w40 in the winter, but it doesn't get that cold in Colorado.

I bought WeatherTech mats for my e30 in October 2009. I am not pleased with them. While they are effective at preventing the slush from my shoes getting the carpeting wet, the material does not clean well. They quickly got dirty and it is not possible to get them clean again. Tried scrubbing with cleanser. The gray rubber or plastic or whatever it is they are made of has become stained from normal shoe dirt, apparently permanently.

They offer custom sizing for your car... unless you drive an e30.

I've heard that you need to treat them with a protectant before use.

                    How's the fit though?

If that is the case, 1.) they should be treated by the manufacturer before sale and 2.) they might at least mention that to purchasers.

What, pray tell, protectant is suitable and available for "The material is PUR Foam halfhard, „Rohrdichte“ 130+30kg/qqm, color darkgrey."?

About the same as the autozone special for $24.99 or any other generic mat.

Why is that? Curious cause I really doubt I'll come across another set of wheels and tires before winter hits. If I still have my SVT Focus it will see more winter duty than the E30. Already got snow tires for it and does awesome in snow.

I have and enjoy the hex-o-mats that Bav Auto sells, perfect fit and very durable.

Sam's Club sells some universal rubber floor mats that are nice. My 325 has a set of gray and my wife's car has black. Actually, her black mats are now in their second car. Her mats are 4 years old and still look good.
For $20 you get two full size fronts and 2 small backs. Available in black, gray or tan. For the E30, they required very little side cutting but I did cut through a slot to accommodate the gas pedal.

I'm gonna drive my 316i this winter. It's bone stock, and I'm not going to lower it until spring.

I'm going to get mudflaps, OEM rubber floor mats, possibly some rally lights in the front, new studless winter tires, and I might put some oil in it. If I'm feeling generous.

                                Don't worry about it.
The guy who said you need to sell them obviously lives where there is no car wash.

Self serve ones are better. Spend a $1.75 and you have a super hot water rinse. Takes all the packed snow in the wheels out, and leaves you 2 minutes to spare so you can rinse out the snow that's now packed in there from plowing through the 3 foot snowpile to get to the car wash.

(I have no idea how I haven't cracked/broken my grille, or my ellipsoids....)
