Gas gauge tank tube

I have a perceptive question regarding the above.

I noticed there is a small hole near the top of the the assembly which looks normal, I also noticed another hole about two inches down at about 60 degrees that is very tiny, and I'm thinking that hole triggers the dash light on the panel gauge, right or wrong is that hole supposed to be there or is it corrossion? The hole looks like it belongs, just making sure before I install it.

thats to allow air to escape as the level sensor fills with gas.
