I drove some high horsepower autos which shift kits and so on. I don't know. Call me american, I think they can be fun when setup right. Drive an big block v8 S10 that chirped slicks everytime the powerglide unit shifted. I don't find any difference between driving a base line 5-speed and a base line auto. The only differences come when you start adding performance. So an automatic e30 is the same to me as 5-speed e30 unless we're talking M3.

Agree, DSGs in VWs for some reason are really fun.

I understand it isn't as important for straight line performence, but the idea of not having control of my car's gears while going through turns and the like is frightening.

yes, its all about the control over what gear it is in. Clutch pedals aren't mandatory. If i could have a 5spd manual valve body and lower lockup speed on an e30 automatic I might choose that over a manual. It is smoother, faster shifting, and allows full control of gears. What's to hate?

are not most of the insanely fast drag cars automatic? and lets just say this- you can never shift faster than an automatic transmission.

even if driving Manuel is fun and gives you control, an automatic will be faster(in a straight line)

My car is an automatic and If I wasn't saving all my funds for travelling it would be a 5 spd already. I would think an automatic would be far more problematic than 5 spd as far as high hp goes. That's if your talking about BMW. I know alot drag muscle cars are automatic. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Mini Cooper 2007 auto with paddles if you want semi auto and zero clutch. Awesome car and so user friendly and handles like a go kart. Its Auto but when you knock it into sport it has 6 gears that (granted change slower than manual) change when you want them too. So you can knock it down a gear on entry to a corner and hold high revs on exit and change up, rather than in some autos I've driven (E60 520 as example) will change up a gear mid corner when you want to be going down a gear! Mini is a surprising car! I love driving it, and what makes it even more fun is the fact I don't have to pay to use it LoL!

                            I didn't realize E30s were top fuel dragsters that did 4-second 1/4 miles. ;)

Who is Manuel, and why is he giving you control?

Oh. I get it. It's cool, I respect your lifestyle.
