    Yay or nay?

Some of you know my red 318is was severely damaged last week when I ran over a large truck's driveline. If not read this.

Theres another 318is in town though with 113k on the odometer. The guy originally wanted $4,800, but I got him down to $4,400 already. Im still feeling kinda a bit iffy about the car. Its got great potential, the body is pretty straight, seems to run nicely, but theres a few little things that keep the car from being mint. Notably:

    Side power mirrors inop.
Slight (but noticeable damage) to the rear valance
Damaged weatherstripping on the passenger's door
    Usual oil + diff leaks
Incorrectly fitting dash (looks like it might have partially been taken apart)
Incorrect front window trim (must have been replaced with 325 trim during windshield replacement)
Wheel isnt straight while driving down the road (seems to track straight though)
Corroded muffler (very apparent exhaust leak)

It does have new brakes and tires though, and has very nice paint and body aside from the rear valance. And the relatively low mileage is a plus too...

You guys think I should go for it?

Just for a comparison, I bought my original 318is about 2 years ago in Seattle for $3500. It had 145k miles on it at the time and, it had been in an accident before, and there were definite issues to deal with.

I can't really comment on anything but the mirrors.. most likely it's just the switch. Mine didn't work when I got my car, I just took the switch apart and cleaned it real good and put dielectric grease inside the contacts to keep it from corroding. it's worked great ever since.

are you going to be able to keep any parts from your car?

That seems like a lot for a 318.

What damage did your previous car sustain from the driveline? Could you maximize the stuff fixed by milking the other guy? ect ect

Ehhh... well the guy seems pretty firm at $4,400. :?

I will be keeping my old car and transferring a bunch of stuff to the new car. So having a parts car will make just about all the repairs needed pretty straightforward.

As for the old car, the underside is thrashed. Underbody has gashes and huge dents, the fuel + brake lines are smashed, the oil pan has a huge hole, the exhaust is toast, the diff is damaged and leaking pretty good, and the left control arm has some nice scars.

So what will the company be doing about your car? Are they going to pay you for your loss, or what? ;-)

Too bad about your car though...

I think it seems like a fair deal, but $4400 does seem really high, but the mileage is not bad at all. Let us know how it goes.

$4,400 seems a bit high. I got my '89 325is in September for $4,800 with 130k in great condition. (Everything works, no scratches or dents) There is a red 318is near me now for $3,700 with 88k. If I were you I would wait on a different car.

James do a PPI with the car and find out what all is wrong with it. If nothing else, you might be able to get the guy down some more. I've passed near mint cars up for corroded mufflers and oil leaks because I didn't want to drive a car that the previous owner neglected.

                      I'd keep looking.
