It only makes sense for a car company to do FWD to hit profit and fuel economy goals. The auto enthusiast age is dead and gone.
The year is 2028 and your son comes up to you and says :

son:" Hey dad, check out this 2009 Nissan 370Z, that would be a fun car to restore!"

dad: "no son, do you know how many airbags are in that thing? we could never afford to fix the airbag system to get the car registered"

More cars than ever are "disposable" and only those who can afford to keep the old ones running and in proper condition to pass safety and emissions will be the ones driving "old" cars in the future. I think cars from 1986-1996 will be in even higher demand for the remaining enthusiasts in the future and will be like the 1964-1974 cars that people are into now.

Yes, because a little cloaked car that's shaped like a harmless Daihatsu has to be the new BMW...

Even if it's a BMW who cares, don't buy it. BMW listens to the customers who buy their cars, not cars from 20 years ago. If you think enthusiasts make up a large portion of BMW owners think again every time you see an e90 328i lease commercial or x5s driven by middle age women.
