I had something similar to this happen, but it was my ginger friend's fault. A few minutes after it locked up when he was playing with the lock it just worked. I blame his gingerness.

Another reason to have central locking functioning properly and use key less entry.Comment

Every E30 I've come across has had double locking. Now, not many people know this (might have been dealer only info), but if you lock yourself out this way and your passenger cylinder is functional, you put the key in the passenger door lock and turn it to lock while pulling the door handle. It may take a few tries, but when you get it right the door will open. Car will still be double locked, but it'll be open.

^This is how I have to unlock my car every time. My driver's side lock will lock the car, but won't unlock it. I have to walk around to the passenger side, turn the key toward unlock (it turns all the way though) and pull on the door handle. Reach through, pull the driver's lock pin, get out, walk around, drive away.
I get looks every once in a while, but it stopped bothering me the third day I owned the car.

Is your central locking not functioning? If it is you can unlock the car from the trunk.

I think I know what your dad did. My 85 318i had the drivers cylinder freeze up, and I had to get it open by turning the passengers lock and pulling on the handle while holding the key in a position so that it would open.Comment

This happened to me when I was up at a lookout in the middle of nowhere...
luckily for me, if I turn the key in my passenger door (it doesn't actually open) but if I turn it and pull my handle, it opens. I had to use the windows to enter/exit.
ANYWAY. When I got home I squirted some WD-40 in the deadbolted lock, gave it a minute, unlocked it.
LOL just read this after posting. hahahaha thats EXACTLY how mine behaves (although my driver door works). damn e30'sThis is how I have to unlock my car every time.
