I'm not convinced that it's going to a be turbo inline six though.

I've also read the BMW recently patented designs for a new V6 :-(.

Well it dose sound like a 6, and there is little chance that BMW will go from 310kw in the E92 M3 back to around 260kw N/A 6. So I would probably put $10 that it will be a turbo 6.

I will also put down $5 that it will be a 3lt turbo 6 with 330kw. I come to this conclusion using the F10 M5 as a base. That engine dose 13.2kw/1000rpm/L apply that to a 3lt 6 with 8rpm redline and you get about 330kw.

Sounds like a turbo 6 for sure.

If its based on the m5 motor, then V6 makes more sense. I hope not though.

I not saying it is based on the M5 motor but if the M5 is putting down 13.2kw/1000rpm/lt then a strait 6 turbo would be very similar in the power department.

If it is a V6 turbo with out all of this valvetronic bullshit I would slap a motec ECU on that bitch and drop her into the E30. Awesome weight distribution and power.

A V6 does have some packaging advantages over an inline, so there might be some serious benefit to going that direction.

nissan makes a nice v6, but wouldn't seem right in a BMW.

Who cares if it is a v6? Obviously their engineers see some advantage to going that route (likely inboard turbos). They will choose the route that ends in better engine performance... if that means it's a V6, then bring it on.
