    Engine without oil. Oh $h!t

1991 BMW 318ic; M42. Went to local (trusted) auto tire Goodyear store for oil change and tire rotation. They appear to have drained oil and replaced filter, but did not put new oil in. Car was driven maybe 100-200 yards when oil light came on. Pulled over immediately (Into another trusted local garage parking lot, conveniently). Other local garage put in 4-5 quarts and car was driven back to Goodyear store. Wet, cool evening. They drained oil and replaced. Do you think any damage was done?

did you notice any odd noises? grinding, shuttering, new squeals?

100-200 yards aint bad, It took me about 3 miles w/o oil to lock up my Eta 3 years ago

Next time change your own oil and rotate your own tires...Quite possibly the simplest things that any car owner can do to keep their car going. I hope you ripped those ;dumb monkeys seven new assholes for fucking up

With the coupons, it is only $7 more than the price of the oil. I'll let them get dirty for it.

I wasn't there, luckily it was my brother in the car. I'd have gone from 0 to scared to a level of pissed off that has never been seen in about 2 seconds. He is calmer than I am.

should of just drove till she blew and then some. u would be recieving a complete engine rebuild. just think, new everything. a reputable good year franchise should do that no questions asked. that kind of bad press they don't want.

          Obviously it wasn't worth it.

I can guarantee damage was done, likely nothing that you should worry about. I recommend running 20w50 oil from now on. I'd raise some MAJOR hell with the company though.

In any case....while i see that only $7 extra for cleanliness can be enticing...when it comes at the cost of potentially welding your pistons to the block I rather save the seven dollars and get moderately dirty

            to each their own.

It'd probably be damn near impossible to get them to pay for a new engine. I don't know if you have noticed the trend but an overwhelming number of garages, especially franchised ones, give exactly 0 shits about you, your vehicle, or anything that they fuck up on your vehicle...They wants your moneys and wants yous to gets outs of theres and could care less if you came back...They have enough other customers that don't even want to think about touching things under the car.

also, keep in mind that the oil light came on...what happens when, in court, you are asked "and did you have any indication that the engine might not be in suitable running condition?" "uh, yeah the oil light came on but that thing pops on all the time, it's usually nothing to worry about..."

              BAM you get nothing

Put it this way: My time and effort is worth more than $7. In any case, they have insurance, and would/will pay for any and all repairs needed.

I see your point. Again, to each their own.

BUT that seems like a whole lot of potential hassle simply because one doesn't want to spend the 30 minutes to do the jobs right oneself

Not to mention an oil change is a good time to check over the whole car so you know if there are any other problems. Changing your own oil is just a much better idea however you look at it.

if there was no oil in it ... the car didnt go 200 yards and then the light came on. It never went out once you started it.

I've been in a newer GM (work at a chevy dealership) and the tech forgot to put oil in it and the light didn't come on until I was halfway in the car wash with it.

While it's possible damage was done, remember that everything still had a coating of oil in it so a couple hundred yards may not have hurt it really.

If you care about your car, you would do a measly oil change on it yourself. Plain and simple. Now, you're going to worry that the engine has some sort of damage done to it and it's going to bug the shit out of you. Aside from that, It probably isn't too serious, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was damage done. Make those idiots pay!
