How to test drive an auto 325i?

It seems to be really slow, how should I test drive it and what to look for when test driving it? it's '91 325i 2dr

P.S. I already searched, but didn't find the auto test drive.. just general what to look for in E30ies...

If you are already complaining about how slow the auto is you may want to reconsider getting an auto. Some things to look for though are how smothly it shifts between gears while driving, and the delay time from when you shift from park to reverse and nutral to drive while stoped. It should shift very quick with out any jerks or clunking.

I really don't have any other choice... there is no good e30 that have 5sp trannys.... actually there are, but they have 250k and above, which is not somthing I'm looking for, I can always save for a swap, isn't it around $500 ?

Closer to $1K to do it right. Probably more. And a lot of your time.

i'd rather have a high milage 5-speed, than an average milage auto

just be patient and wait until something pops up.

I don't think it's worth buying an auto just because you can't find a manual. Swapping is an option, but why go through with the hassle when you can put that money towards modding a manual ?

i was in the situation that you were. i found that most auto e30s were in a bit better shape than the 5 speeds, and i had all the stuff for a 5 speed swap from my old car. I found a clean auto 325i, and did the swap. all in all it cost right around 1k with help from my shop, and when i did my head swap the motor looked really good inside. id rather find an easy drivin auto, swap to 5 speed, and then have a 5 speed with a strong motor.

With an auto test out every gear, and make sure they shift smoothly(no sunden clunks). I'd buy the auto, save and then swap to a 5-speed.

i think that an auto e30 wouldn't be abused as much as a manual

start out in 1st and hold your gears until 6k. shifting it probably isn't too great for it (I do it all the time) but the worst thing that can happen is you have to swap to a 5 speed..

and as far as autos not being beat on as much... hahaha! I suppose it's harder to miss a shift but you can certainly beat the fuck out of them. neutral drops anyone? brake stands? all of that shit is hard on a car, and not too hard to figure out..

I heard that shifting from first in an auto is the worst thing you can do. It'll burn the synchros or whatever. Just see if it shifts smoothly. Also punch it so that you hit the kickdown switch. Make sure the fluid level is up to level first.
