Wow, there seems to be a pretty unanimous deal going on here. Looks like I'll still be looking for the other must-own-in-my-lifetime car, an M30-swapped slicktop 318is with rebuilt air conditioning.

Thanks to all for the sincere advice.

        Sound, sage advice.

Maybe bimmer_e30 will chime in on his vast experience/knowledge of E32's.

Why would you put a boat anchor in the lightest e30? If your going to ruin the purpose of that car, why not start off with a 325bout that nobody cares about?

if you're going to get a money-pit V12 from that era, it may as well be an 850i. basically the same car anyway.

Those are much more expensive. Amazing styling, though - I saw one in the service area of my local dealer last month. Gorgeous.

Ruin the purpose of the car? I thought the purpose of old BMW's was to hoon around in the most enjoyable way possible. Do you have any idea how many 318is shells are going into junkyards because the M42 is used up? The 40 pounds off the roof and killer styling has the same advantage with a heavy engine as with a light one.

Also because they never imported a 325i/is slicktop, at least that I know of. And because the M30 and S52 are equivalent in weight. If you condemn the M30 for weight balance, throw the S52 right in there with it.

And lastly, my kids say that the slicktop will match my bald head while I drive around, and that ain't bad.
