The M50 is part of the newer generation of BMW engines which uses the 24 Volt charging system to power the more modern electronics systems like GPS, subwoofers, TVs in the headrest, bluetooth, etc. Everyone I know that has done the 24 volt swap did it because their stock 12 volt or 16 volt e30 electrical system wasnt good enough to handle an alarm, system, and a cell phone charger at the same time. The M50 is just the easiest way to get a 24 volt system.Comment

it'd be easier to just find a 325 and m20 swap it.1989 325is / 2.7, 274 cam, e30 M3 5-lug

You could get an M20, add it to an M30 and get M50...then you wouldn't have to notch the subframe.Comment

Wait wait guys wtf nobody answered his question legitimately, I hear you can put a m50 in a 325i but how about the 318is. I am very interested in this because I want a m50 in my 325e. A serious answer for once will help with my conquest.
On another note does anybody know what I need from the m20 and what I need from the m30 to make the m50?

You take the head off the m 20 and put it on the m30.
20 plus 30 = 50 . Hurdur.
You also need the oil pan / pump off of an 89 isuzu Rodeo1985 325e M50TU(Sold)
