But, they are a nice low cost stepping stone to bigger and better 24v fun if $$$ is an object, and an M20 isnt in the long term picture. Main reason for reccomending an M50 is the electronics are the same between that and an OBD1 s52 swap

^Yeah Chris was feeling pretty poorly for me and is cutting me a good deal on a bunch of the service. He said it didn't eat up the head too bad. one broken rocker and something else. He's going to swap what's good in mine into one he's got int he shop and fix me up. I wish I had the $$ to do an SXX but I just don't right now.

I didn't do the timing belt because until last night I didn't know it was an issue. This is my first BMW and JUST last night I was reading about the seriousness of the belt here and literally 6 hours later Chris calls me to tell me the thing broke. Weak.

Cars aren't investments. Don't base your decision on how much you can make on it later by selling. Base it on whether or not you want the extra power.

Yes and no, because once done it's just that easier to convert to a bigger displacement down the road.

OP sorry to hear of your pains.

if it were me, i would go find a good running m50 in a parts e36 for 5-700 bucks. change a few gaskets, get an e34 or 6 cyl e32 oil pan for 75-100.00.

now you will have better reliability, newer technology, a smoother running engine, and better potential to make a few horsepower mods in the future.

all this for around a thousand dollars. it will increase the value and desirability of the car, but i agree with above, that i wouldn't base my decision on this aspect alone.

M50 is alot easier to work on, alot less to go wrong, less prone to overheating, better powerband, more efficient, prettier, and cooler then an m20.

Its kinda like replacing your iphone 3g with the new iphone 4. It realy does all the same shit, but its better to just keep things newer and up to date and its really much more expensive.

so not true, in any way at all. alot easier to work on??????????????????
overheating???????? M50 have the exploding waterpumps!!!!!
since when is a bunch of plastic pretty, personally, I find the allu. on my M20 extremely sexually arousing!

really sorry about your loss OP. stay with the mighty M20, just put a new timing belt on a "new" one and roll out.

I wasn't suggesting that swapping for an Mxx Sxx would be for investment reasons alone. The primary reason for a swap is of course power gains. But when a swap also helps your car's resale value increase then you don't have to feel like such a chump for sinking ridiculous $ into it. In any case, I can't afford any swap of any kind right now. I may take up a kind offer by Mr325 to put his M20 in my car if Castro's thinks it's the right move. Tell you what I'd never do again though: I'd never buy an M20 equipped car and leave the timing belt alone. :/

Sucks man. Gets me nervous to drive the 5 miles to do a timing belt job at my buddys place. Dont want to risk it going on the way there.
