Since the two sensors are the same, I thought I'd first swap them just to see if one was bad. I also swapped the connectors. Now it won't start at all. I returned everything to the original position, and it still won't start.

Maybe. One plug just slipped right out of the socket. There is a 1988 528E at the pic n pull. Will that car have the sensors? Seems like it would based on:
from 9/85 12 14 1 710 668
find these on

They should be the same sensors, but they aren't that expensive to replace. The rear diff (it it's a 3.25 LSD) out of that 5er would be a nice upgrade for you as well.Comment

I found 2 sensors off an 87 325. Installed them and the car fired right up. I didn't even have to crank it. Normally it would start after 2-3 seconds. This time it was immediate! I drove it around and around, well past the time it would die. Kept going.
Unfortunately I had a fuel leak in my fuel pressure regulator. Started a little fire. No damage, but I need to get a new hood liner.Comment

There you go. CPS's are a huge culprit alot of the time. If the wire splits off from the sensor, just get a new one, BC the old one is done.Yours truly,
