    5k ideas

Ok so heres the deal, i have a 91 318is, I will have 5k to spend on it for the motor what sugestions do you guys have? I was thinking about a m50 with a turbo kit bcause i know i can get the suff done for 5k but it will make right around 300hp. I then was thinking about the m66 i think thats the code i may be wrong but the 4l v8, but i dont know if i can do that for 5k. I was thinking about the v8 because theres not a lot of them. Let me know what you guys think.

...that's where i'll be at in a couple of months, but, is there anything that can be done to the m42 to achieve 2/3 of those #'s you're looking for.

go for the m50 turbo if you can. i believe the 4l v8 is too wide for the e30 engine bay. if someone can double check that. NA s50 is also a wise choice too.

ya...you can fit it but it's really really tight.
like look at the clearence of everything in this pic...the motor is basically resting on the firewall and shock towers. plus i think having the weight of a giant motor on the front axle is going toss the balance of the car off like no tomorrow. imo, very extreme and cool to do, but if you want to drive your car around corners and like not paying gas every couple of days then don't do it. i rather go s50 route (which i plan on doing) cause it's lighter, not a guzzler and it'll make my car as fast as i need it without any modifications.

How do you think you could have a (reliable) boosted M50 out the door for $5? Active Autowerke's stage 1 turbo is almost $11,000 itself.

There is a V8 powered m3 running in Street Mod in SCCA. Check out http://www.edgemotorworks.com/

It will dispell all the myths about the weight of the blocks etc. You'd be surprised that even the Chevy LSx motors are lighter than most 6 cylinder set up. The site will also give you a reality check on the the tuning required to get everything setup and kosher.

Im not a big fan of turbo BMW's period. NA all the way.

So go with an s50, that could be done for 5k if your smart about it.

                          Are you kidding?

The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

i understand the point you're trying to make, but you're using a grossly overrated figure. with the advent of TT/BL kits, active actually faced competition, and dropped a lot of the their prices. most kits are around 7k, which is still out of range. but stop living in 2001.

An M62 weighs almost exactly the same as an S52, in fact it's a bit lighter. It's all aluminum.
