    New 87 325i 4dr

Hey Guys so today my Dad went out and bought an 87 E30 325i. He got it for a good price with only 103k miles on the clock 1 owner and best part of all NO CRACKS IN THE DASH. It is Bronzit and its comfort seats feel great. However since it is a used car it does need a few maintainence things so I have some questions for you guys.

    1. What are the big "mechanical" differences in the 87 and the 88-91. I know the radiator is different, and the boot to the intake looks different. But anything else?

    2. How do I replace a fog light bulb on the 87? Is the whole housing needed, or a is the housing and bulb all one piece?

    3. The automatic shift knob is falling off, how do I replace it? Is it as simple as replacing the retaining screw and tightening it down.

    4. MOST important! What is the best motor oil for this engine? I have seen alot of people say 10w-40. I live in SC so its not SUPER cold but it also isn't Florida weather.

If this is in the wrong Category, I apologize and please relocate it thanks.
Any help is greatly apprecitated as I know nothing about the later model E30s both of mine are 91 M42s.

Have searched especially from number 4, and I want more opinions cause nobody has given a definitive answer. Number 3, he is 50 years old and doesn't feel like rowing through gears all the time. #2 The fogs aren't under the car on his 87. Thanks for the help.

oil weight? why dont you click on the first result.

gorilla glue. lol. it either uses a set screw or it just pops off. take a look at it.

you have the hanging fogs? oh lolololol. just take them off.

and really, google is an amazing tool that is completely underutilized. any question you can ask has an answer and it's on google. if you're not getting the right answer, you're not asking the right question. it's all there.

Like I said its my Dad's car, he doesn't want a manual as he is looking for a cruiser and doesn't want to deal with the manual. Thanks for the Oil answer, gonna go with 10w40 for the winter months then to 20w50.

              2. Unscrew the two screws on the front of the light. Hold the glass or it will fall out. On the back there's a locking mechanism holding the bulb in place. Squeeze the pins together and swing it back. Take the old bulb and disconnect the wire attached to the harness. Take the bulb to Autozone, match, and buy a pair. Install and Reverse instructions.

Just because no one else has said it, GET THE TIMING BELT CHANGED NOW!!! if you hold off on this, you can cause your low(er) miled M20 to become a low(er) miled boat anchor.....

answer to #3 is get and replace the set screw, tighten it down and leave it alone until the auto shits itself, and then do a 5 speed swap (rebuild is expensive, used units are iffy at best)

DO NOT REV THE ENGINE IN NEUTRAL OR PARK. due to a faulty set of seals, the first gear clutch will become pressurized and then fail if you do the above. turning your automatic into a walk-o-matic
