You're right, I should have clarified - on the east coast I'd (well, not myself, I build them) spend UP to $4k.

an e30 in this market would have to be very clean to get 3k.

in the summer a very dialed in convertible can go for 5k if you are patient.

However in general not only do most used cars go for 1500 an under, you might have a long wait even getting 1500$ for one.

Most people are looking for reliability and gas mileage. so youre selling to 2% of buyers just to start ( data shows that the search honda civic, and toyota truck covers 65% of used car searches the top searches on craigslist are honda civic, toyota truck and third is honda civic toyota truck honestly before accord.)
but even of those bmw buyers, almost none have 3k in cash for an 88. They can get a e36 for 2500 all day.

and most that have 3k in cash, probably can get a loan for an e45.

So just remember that theres 10 pimped out e30s for every e30 buyer with 3k.

Yeah, I'm going to side with the majority and say $2500 on a good day.

im not surprised that ebay car went for $7k. but that's east coast pricing.

in the land of no rust e30s are so cheap and good. :(

Just do some more research and look at the pricing patterns. It'll give you an upper hand when negotiating cause you'll get an idea of how much the flaws will lower its value. I did a shit ton of research on prices in relation with the problems the cars had and was able to get a 1988 super eta in good condition for $500. The knowledge is worth more with every cent you save.

I refused 10k for my 88 325is but I'm an original owner and everything has been replaced, the market is whatever it will bear. these cars are getting rare.

Yup! I was the one who bought that car. However, I wasn't the winning bidder. The winning bidder flaked and I was able to get the car for a bit less than that price ;). It is in pretty damn good condition though and i'm glad I found a car that was as well kept. It had over 100 pages of documentation including a journal that logged just about every significant event in the car's history. I drove it home to Houston from Atlanta and it never missed a beat avg'ing 78+ mph. I've done some basic maintenance on in since getting it home as i'm OCD, but that's just me. The "cruddy engine bay" may appear that way as most of the original cosmoline is still on the valve cover etc.

A car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I found the car I wanted, with a well documented history and paid what I paid. I prefer to buy the right car instead of buying something that may bite me in the ass down the road.
