I wonder what effect lightening has on fuel economy? I'd like to know what the hall-of-fame lightness thread guys get when driving normally.

so... you fill up, let the gas nozzle click off on its own and then drive for a week. you fill up again, let the gas nozzle click off and then take your miles and divide by gallons filled up. it could be 10 gallons you used, or 11. or even 5. w/e. that's how much gas you used.
dividing the miles driven by the maximum hold of your tank is just stupid.

My average is somewhere between 9 and 11 l/100km in the eta. I'm scared to think of what it is in the M.

Im getting about 23-25 on my cabbie with M40 swap, ZF trans, 2.93 rear end
Light comes on about 300 miles, takes 12-12.5 to fill it up.

Our cars (cabrios, not e30's) are substantially heavier than the rest (of e30's, not cars) , too so 18 mpg isn't terrible. btw, that's about what I get with a chip and 91 octane.
I've been driving cars older than my gf for my entire life so I've just learned to live with gas gauges that only tell me how much gas I have when I'm about halfway full. If the needle is to the left I'm either empty or full...all the way to the right and I'm either full or empty :)
or my favorite with my old datsun pickup was that the tank was either E for enough or F for "effed".

My 84 M10 drives 370 miles on 12 gallons. That's close to 31mpg with mixed highway and city driving. Pretty damn good for a 28 year old car, compared to some of the new cars.

I'd say go by the OBC but I'm not entirely sure it is anymore accurate than the gauge. I don't know where it pulls its signal. The digital output would be theoretically more precise than the analog one, but if the issue is a tired sending unit I'm unsure of the ramifications.
One thing I will say, though, is I try to minimize the amount of times I run below 1/8 tank of gas. Once you start getting to the end of a tank you run the risk of pulling sediment into your fuel filter.
One other thing, if you're trying to gain more mpg, is to fill up in the early morning when gas is more compressed and you'll get denser fuel from the station. I'm too old to drag my butt out of bed for this kind of thing but it's something to remember if you can get into a good fueling regiment instead of just looking around for gas when you're about empty.

Do this for a month and then see if you're still getting 25mpg.
