your e30 is a gas GUZZZLER!

Yes, according to fueleconomy.gov; some of us drive gas guzzlers! I was surfing the web, when I casually came upon this website. I simply input 1991 bmw 325i and was taken back when I saw the results. The site claims my e30 gets a combined 15 mpg!

I can say from my own experience this websites statistics are invalid. I'm sure most of you would agree. I drive my e30 on 240 mile road trips (currently twice a week), it runs 290 miles before the needle is in the red zone. I'm sure it would easily clear 300 miles before really having to fuel up. With that said. I believe its safe to say I get an avg of 25mpg highway and a solid 20-21 city.

So my question for you is; what do you get on your e30? Does a chip make a difference in mpg? Does the m50 swap? Does the Octane level?

Depends greatly on outside temp for me.
    Cold weather <60
    Hwy: 24-25
    City: 18

    Warm weather 60-90
    Hwy: 25-27
City: 24 <-Makes no sense to me either, but it is what it is

    Toasty weather 90-110
    Hwy:29-31
    City:25

    89 325i.

My cheap Ebay chip made a good 3mpg increase all along all of them (Required 91). The WAR chip maintained that. The MAF gained a lot of smoothness, low end torque was gained back, did not affect MPGs

I run 91. all day long, Have yet to test my MPG's on an 87 tune on a highway run.

ALSO! When the car was an auto, I WOULD get 16MPG in the city, cold or warm, with or without the ebay chip. 23 MPG hwy, tops.

When I switched to manual, Kept 4.10's. It was hovering the 18, 23 area.

And the first three are now, with the 3.64 LSD.

    EDIT: Woman's car.
    As stock as stock can be. 89 325i 4d. 5sp 3.73 open.
    19 city
25 hwy (Measured on a 1500m road trip, 50-80 degrees)

And that 318is figure on the website makes me lol really hard. Really? They think that thing gets a combined 21MPG?
What the fuck ever. I'd like to see one get that low on the street, even flogging on it regularly.

The EPA changed its fuel economy test a few years ago to more accurately reflect real world driving but at the same time they also took the original EPA numbers for older cars and simply revised them down by a fixed % to try to make them comparable to the new test. That obviously didn't work out very well. Click the "More information about this vehicle" link then click "View Original EPA MPG" to see the pre revision window sticker numbers.

          For example for the 318is
New numbers are 19/25, 21 combined
Original window sticker was 21/27, 24 combined.

300 miles on a 16 gallon tank is about 18 mpg. If you fill your tank up, drive your miles for the week, then fill your tank up again, then divide the miles you drove with the gallons it took you to fill up you'll be able to verify your mileage. Do this for a month and then see if you're still getting 25mpg.

                  well before e30's.....

                  i was driving a 4.6 V8 Ford truck.... 14 MPG on the highway... 9 or 10 city...

before that an old v6 buick... claimed 22 highway.. (but i dont think i ever got that)

and my e30's were getting 20 city and 28 highway (driving easy)

so anything better than those were amazing to me!

but to admit.. i would rarely drive it easy ever... but i am far more willing to drop the xtra bux for gas because it is far too much fun to push it...

Ok so when I hit 290miles off of a full tank my needle was in the red zone. I filled up and the car took 12 gallons then was full again. Is my tank smaller? I don't think I have a 16 gallon tank.

I'm pretty sure your '91 should have a 16 gallon tank. I wouldn't be so sure that your gas gauge needle is particularly accurate. I'd be more inclined to suspect that your gas gauge is less accurate than your late model having a 14 gal tank...but my cabrio's specs are different from the rest in a lot of ways so this might be one more.

I'd say go by the OBC but I'm not entirely sure it is anymore accurate than the gauge. I don't know where it pulls its signal. The digital output would be theoretically more precise than the analog one, but if the issue is a tired sending unit I'm unsure of the ramifications.

One thing I will say, though, is I try to minimize the amount of times I run below 1/8 tank of gas. Once you start getting to the end of a tank you run the risk of pulling sediment into your fuel filter.

One other thing, if you're trying to gain more mpg, is to fill up in the early morning when gas is more compressed and you'll get denser fuel from the station. I'm too old to drag my butt out of bed for this kind of thing but it's something to remember if you can get into a good fueling regiment instead of just looking around for gas when you're about empty.

I agree with your advice I've heard early fueling is good and according to the e30 manual you shouldn't wait to last minute to fuel up. I did it this once to see exactly how far I could get her.

My 84 M10 drives 370 miles on 12 gallons. That's close to 31mpg with mixed highway and city driving. Pretty damn good for a 28 year old car, compared to some of the new cars.
