    Paypal Fee

So who is responsible for the paypal fee (2.9%)? The buyer or seller?

I have done so many paypal transactions that I have not noticed who actually is suppose to pay it. Usually I take the hit on it. Paypal also says that the seller is suppose to pay that 2.9%. Only big ticket items ($5000+) , I ask that the buyer pays the fee. I was just wondering because I had a guy want me to pay the fee also on some RSs that I was getting.

it depends. if you are the seller and your price includes the paypal fee then the buyer is responsible for paying it.

If you do not include the fee then you are paying it out of total cost of the item

    gift to avoid fees.

It's not the buyer or the seller, per say.
It's the person that is transferring the money that has to. Because it's the transaction itself that is charged the fee.

Gift your friends to avoid fees. Don't ever gift to a seller.

sounds like you want it both ways

on big ticket items you normally ask the buyer to pay but now you're the buyer of some RS' and you don't want to pay the fee? well, I bet that seller thinks those RS' are big ticket item so pay him the money so he gets the right amount whatever that means (paypal, amazon, fees, no fees) :)

No, RSs are not a big ticket item. Big ticket items are Alpina slide throttle bodies for $6,000...things like that. Did not ask for it both ways.

Yeah because so many people abused the "gift" concept. So now we all pay.

seems to me that the transaction is either large enough to worry about or an insignificant amount

if you think it's an amount worth worrying about then chances are the seller thinks so too and I was just pointing out that your own experience is that when you are selling something that is a significant amount to you then the buyer pays

if it's an insignificant amount then the thread is pointless

now if the question is how to avoid fees then amazon payments is better in that regard in my opinion

I just factor fees in my asking price. If someone local comes and gives me cash, I'll give them a slight discount. Easy enough.

                    i always pay the fee
since sometimes paypal doesnt take the fee on stuff i sell
but sometimes they do..so i always include 2 or 3 extra dollars on the prices of my items depending how much im selling it for ofcourse...

Except those who are lucky enough to get the serious deals on the 'Bay. There are a few out there.

Of course, there's a lot more bullcrap on there, like $2k MKIV engines (whole car!) and $600 ragged sport seats that would be $80 from a pick n' pull... But still, there are a few deals out there.

According to Paypal TOS it is the seller, or the person receiving the payment. It is also against their TOS to ask the buyer to pay the fee.

Been using them for over 12 years for my business and have never asked the buyer to cover the fee. I also will not do business with people that ask me to cover the fee or to send as a gift.

It's the cost of doing business.

Quoted for truth. It's pretty hard to sell anything these days if you only take personal checks, money orders or cash. If a seller overtly adds this surcharge, I usually pass.
